Do I need an action wrench or barrel vise?

Can I get by with wood blocks in my bench vise and a heavy duty strap wrench?

I've got a heavy duty strap wrench from Rigid:

I've also got a chain strap wrench that I can wrap a rubber belt around to protect the barrel.

Anyone ever try this?

Don't NEED but may be easier with proper tools

Depends on what barrel nut you have. You may need some leather or rosin for your wood blocks to go between the bore and the barrel. If you have the slotted nut you need the wrench.if the action still turns you could us a wrench on the lug as an anti-rotation device for the action. Protect the finish of the action with a buffer material. You can do it! Ask more questions especialy on the reassembly.... double check yourself!

I've got the Wheeler barrel nut wrench. The barrel has been off before but I don't know how tight my gunsmith installed the nut when he installed the barrel.

I might give it a shot when I get my barrel.

The only tools you NEED to remove a barrel:

Barrel Nut Wrench
Action Wrench of some kind to hold the ACTION and the RECOIL LUG in place while you turn the barrel NUT.

A set of barrel blocks or a fixture of some kind can be handy to hold the barrel while putting it all together or taking it apart but you never need one to do the job. I have changed barrels many times over the years and have used barrel blocks to do the job only a few times, back when I had not yet learned how to do it the easy (what I consider the RIGHT way) on this site. I paid good money for a really nice barrel vise to change the barrels on a Remington 700 so it wasn't a total waste. I don't use it ever anymore on the Savages. I just clamp the barrel in a bench vise with some padding material to hold it fairly snugly while working on the action / barrel nut.

get action wrench, I been trying to remove my barrel for 2 or 3 days with no luck using barrel vise, well just wood blocks in my bench vise.
