Savage model 10TR build

Well after a long wait I got my unfinished Mcmillian A5 stock in. Build quality was great. Took some photos of the rifle for you Tac nuts.

Stock: McMillian A5 with forward Anschutz rail + adjustable comb and 3 way adjustable butt ceracoated. Installed flush mount caps for removable sling

Stabilizers: Accushot monopod on a quick detach rail and Atlas Bi-pod with quick detach

Magazine: DarkEagle custom 10rd

Bolt: timed and Trued with Vortex Flutes ceracoated

Action: Trued + Minimal Headspace

Optics: Vortex PST 6-24 FFP mil-mil with level + precision Vortex Mounts on EWG 20MOA rail

Muzzle brake: PRI QCB

Just got done painting her with my super secret camo ;) also Glass and pillar bedded the rifle (The stock fit of the Mcmillian was decent but it definitely will benefit from glass bedding.

I will as soon as I get some lol. I went to range the day and couldn't hold a group to save my life. I only had one type of ammo it was loads from some guy who was pretty reputable around here but mabye my gun just didn't like them. I would have 2 decent ones than one 2 inches away. Best 5 shot group at 100 was 1.5 inches and the way I see it this rifle should be Capable of 1/2 to 3/4 moa. Unless I got a lemon savage

Hey man . Sorry for late response but it was nobler hpbt bullets in new Winchester brass loaded with fast burning powder to 2850
fps. I guess my gun didn't like them because I know a bunch of people who likes the rounds. I've got 200 selling

I believe the 10tr factory barrel is 1 in 10". I'm not sure what weight the bullets were, but the savage 1 in 10" loves heavies. For a loaded ammunition, try the federal gold metal match 175 grain or hornady superformance with the 178 bthp.

My 10p with 20" 1 in 10" bull loves to eat 175s and 178s. It won't even stay on paper with anything below 168 grain bullets, but it can hold a consistent sub
.5 Moa with my handloads.

I'm currently running rl15 at 43.1 grains in lake city lr brass with cci primers and hornady 178 grain amax bullets. Loaded to a coal of 2.81". That's burning about 2600 fps.

I'll give those rounds a try and put her in my lead sled to take out any of my error. Hope she isn't a lemon lol. Can a muzzle brake have any effect on accuracy? I know it's effects poi but I would think it would be Consistent.

I wouldn't think your brake would effect it that negatively, unless the rounds really don't like the crown on it. You can certainly try it without to determine that.

The brake crown shouldn't matter should it? The inside diameter is bigger so the round doesn't touch it? I will inspect the factory crown. How can you tell if it's not right.

The crown doesn't necessarily affect the bullet from touching it directly but from how evenly it distributes the gasses around the bullet as it's exiting. If it's misshaped or irregular, it could throw the bullets trajectory off. Some bullet won't shoot well just because they don't like the degree of crown. It's not quite as critical as the crown directly on the end of the barrel because the gasses are mostly being redirected before it gets to the brake's muzzle. In some cases, though, it can still make an effect. I would think that considering the quality of brake you've chosen that this wouldn't be a problem to consider.

There's a variable because of the unknown amount of times you can use a piece if brass. My estimate based on my projected use of my lc lr brass is .70 a round. So, generally about half of what an equal round would cost loaded.

Can I buy like 20 off you? Or trade for the ones I have I'd like to see how they preform.

I wouldn't mind selling you some, but it probably wouldn't be a good idea for you to fire my loads without doing a load weight test to determine where you show pressure signs first. My load could be way too hot for your rifle.

How do I do that? Would the rounds I'm using now be hotter than those it being over 2800 fps? Or does that not matter.

a 168 grain projectile in .308 win moving over 2800 fps is very very fast. I would really have to see the chrono numbers from your rifle to believe it. Those numbers are likely what was used in an extended barrel test rifle. If you've already chrono'd, and that's what you're getting, I stand corrected. Either way, velocity doesn't necessarily mean pressure. You can get more velocity with the same amount of case pressure using different powders. Hornady's superformance 178 bthp moves really, really fast. Probably not too far from the mark of 2800 fps in a lengthy barrel, but the powder charge is still on a lower/safe node so that it can be used in practically all rifles. Also, your round is based on 168 grains where mine is based on a 178 grain. My recipe is based on a m118lr military long range development from a couple gens ago. The powder charges I use are higher than stated max from the hornady manual. So, better safe than sorry.

The best way for you to move forward with reloads is to develop some using a stated min and max from the powder manufacturers website or reloading manual. you can load 3 to 5 rounds for each .3 grains throughout the powder range. You can also test your barrels hormonics through this test. Look up the OCW test, and you'll find some good info. It helps you find a "node" where you'll find the most consistency throughout a certain range rather than finding the most accurate specific powder charge. That helps you develop a load that will work consistently with minor variations in weather and the inconsistencies with the reloading process.

Otherwise, if you're not ready to reload, get some hornady superformance 178 or gold metal match 175 to see how your rifle eats them.

If you can't shoot that ammo well in your gun, than you need to check your shooting abilities or get a smith to check it out.

The test wasn't my rifle it's only a 20" I believe he took the test from a 24 or 26 in barrel. I know it was chrono tested though.

I do appreciate all the help and information it's very helpful. I've been shooting all my life a d have gone out to 1000 yds with some earlier rifles and have done 600yd law enforcement competitions the level of skill is no problem. I have never reloaded however. I did want to get into it as I know it's the only way to get great groups out of a good rifle. Do you think 168 gr is to light in a 20in barrel? I will grab those rounds and test this weekend.

I think 168 should still shoot decently, but the 20 inch savage I have doesn't like anything below 175.
