Perhaps this has been covered elsewhere on the site, I did a search and didn't find anything...
I have a 26" 1:9 barrel taken off of an early 2000s vintage 12FV, and when I measure to the lands with a 75gr Hornady HPBT I get ~2.295".
I recently purchased a 20" 1:9 barrel taken off of an 11 Hog Hunter, and when I measure to the lands with the same bullet I get ~2.395".
Does anybody definitively know if Savage went to a longer 223 throat on their newer rifles?
I THINK, so take it for only that, That they don't follow a rigid spec; per se.
I think that they use a gracious range, or perhaps follow the nato throat.
I've had 3 different FP's all with different, but VERY long throats.
I'll have my LnL gauge this Friday. I'm almost thinking that blissful ignorance was the way to go.
I've been measuring these particular chambers for the last 20 yrs. as a personal study. I've never found any with less than .125" freebore and the longest was .265".
You will never see a Savage barrel in .223 chamber with less than .100" of freebore. I got that straight from the horses mouth.
There seems to be a lot of shooters that have a big hang up about freebore length. Freebore length is not as important as freebore diameter. Bullets don't neccesarily have to be close the lands to shoot accurate.
I agree, and longer freebore lowers pressures, too, so people can load a decent amount too much powder, but still have actual pressures that are safe (Savage's often-large 223 chambers help with that, too).
As another thought: Could the longer-throated chamber just have a whole lot more rounds through it?

here is your answer. You can read it in print on the net so it is true. Now, me reading between the line would say you will never get a .0010 spec because there is not one that repeatably accurate in savages box of reamers, milling machines or operators. What the books say for numbers is not real world 100%!Quote:

FWIW, I recently sold a Stevens 200 .223 barrel and it too measured 2.395" to the lands with a 75gr HPBT...
AR15, Weatherby and anyone else you want to name or any book and printed material you want to site are not Savage Barrels.
Your not going to magically change anything in there manufacturing specs with all your charts. Your charts are very informative, but not laws that have to be followed.
It would be great if after you give your Very Well Researched and Informed opinion, you have a bit of tolerance and not force feed it beyond a reasonable number of posts to the point you have turned it to an argument.
And yet another clueless sole who failed to heed my warning. I'm going to run out of free 7-day vacations at this rate.
