Wood on early 110 rifles?

I need to cut out a bad spot and repair a 110 stock with a new piece of wood.
Does anyone know if early stocks were made of regular walnut?
This rifle was manufactured in 1958.

Thats going to be a tough one. Even if you find the same grade and type of wood, the difference between trees will be enough not to match. The way I would try and match would be; take finish off and bring your stock with you down to the sawmill to match it up the best possible with board they have.

Yes. I have one made in 1957 and it's hand checkered walnut.

I have an additional question for someone that might know something about Savage stocks.
On my rifle stock, I have a small plastic piece fitted in the bolt channel of the stock.
Has anyone seen this on a early rifle? I removed the one small screw but it still will not budge. I do not want to destroy it trying to get it out. Curious to see if it can be popped out with no damage.

Leave it in....they were screwed and glued at the factory. The insert is just a filler for the small gap around the bolt handle and the bolt release.

So, if I need to refinish stock after my repair I should just tape it off while removing old finish, sanding and the application of new finish?
