I have a 7 mm, actually a couple, but the Savage is here, barrel to ship next week. It may be overkill, but the brass (.35 Whelen) is necked down and turned, bullets and powder in place and I should be up and running end of June. Then I will have what I want, how many times does that happen?
-
You should look at 7.5 Swiss. A shade less capacity than a 30-06, shoots all the same bullets so you can do an ELD hunting bullet.
-
Shot a 338-06 (non AI, just a run through the sizer) for a while, was really intrigued by the round.
Am very interested in the AI version, really looking forward to see how this project turns out.
Any progress updates?
-
Got notice that the barrel ships Monday, I will be getting it put together end of next week, then let the shooting begin...
-
Worriedman If you are working on an 338-06 AI Why are you advertising that you are looking for an A square set of dies?
-
As I set about necking my .35 Whelen brass down, I was getting bad runout on the AI dies, got a .338-06 A Square and it did a much better job of sizing down the Whelen brass. Once I get it fireformed it will not be necessary!

I have a 338-06 McGowen barrel on an older (1966 area) small shank 110 donor. Shoots fine. 30-06 go/no go gauges work for 06, 338-06, and 35 Whelen. I think it is also good for 270 (but don't rely on me).

After posting I saw I was way out of date (page 1) so ignore my ramblings.
-
Cool what loads are you trying?
-
Fireforming loads were 55.5 gr of Reloader 15 with Speer 200 grain, I was not taking a lot of time but rather wanted to get zeroed in and get my brass formed, I will tweak that load some as I have a lot of the 200 gr., Speers, and will maybe just use that to deer hunt with in TN they do show good promise. I am working up loads for 185 gr. Hornady GMX with WIN 748 and BL-C2 this weekend.
-
Nice- keep us posted for sure. As I remember bine really liked the 225 Speers, seemed a good middlewight bullet and very accurate.
-
Zeroing in on my hunting load, could not make the Hornady GMX 185 gr. group, Barnes 185 TTSX is a better fit for my barrel.
Two charges of Reloder 15, the last five rounds grouped about the bull, 59.5 gr., .050 0ff the lands.

Looks like you're on the right path!

Shoot it without the lead sled before your hunt. Your POI will change.
-
I am running it off leather bags this week, been too busy with work to get back to the range, but I have a 100 rounds loaded to check at 200 for final setting, two weeks out from trip!
-
All worked well except the weather, snowed a lot in Montana high country. Did not get a clean shot at a decent bull so I decided to take a fat cow instead. Rifle performed flawlessly, 346 yard knock down shot.
Very pleased with the setup and my result!

346 on an elk is nothing to sneeze at- well done!!
