I just bought a standard barrel savage hmr rifle. I wanted the heavy barrel one but there was none to be founded around my area. Did I mess up be choosing the standard barrel over the heavy barrel, what is the difference ?

The 2 big differences are the added weight of the Heavy barrel, and the heavy barrel will be stiffer and absorb more heat so you can fire more rounds before your POI starts to wander.
No you didn't mess up, unless you are planning to compete in some kind of competition rimfire matches or something. For normal small game hunting and plinking and informal target you will likely not see a noticeable difference, and the rifle will be nice and light for carrying in the woods.
I agree....only way I would get a heavy barrel in any caliber would be as a second rifle in the same caliber. Unless I had enough property to shoot at 400-600 yards. At my place I have 140 yards to shoot.
I prefer heavy barrels myself. But there is nothing wrong with a lighter one if it suits your uses better.
Thanks BootsMcguire, I do like the rifle but started having second thought about the thinner barrel. This is my third Savage rifle and if it shoots like the other two I'll be happy.
