Specialty Pistol
I think I remember reading somewhere that one can legally convert a rifle to a specialty pistols, if the barrel is 16 inches and the overall length is 26 inches. I'm thinking of cutting off a Choate savage long action varmint stock and adding a 20 inch barrel and action.

Go for it. There's a lot of BS about converting a rifle action to a pistol BUT, the ATF says "in writing", if the barrel is at least 16" long and the OAL of the rig is 26" long, it's still a rifle, no matter what it looks like. Any barrel shorter than 16" makes it a SBR (short barreled rifle) and you end up with issues. ATF type.
I built an SP out of a left hand Model 10 repeater action with a 16" barrel and an OAL of at least 26". Works for me.

Mike is correct. 16 & 26 will be fine. The cut off Choate actually works very well. The hollow pistol grip actually has enough meat to do some filing on it to shape it. I was going to cut the forearm back a little but my wife talked me out of it or to try it before cutting. I'm glad I listened to her, I can slip a sling stud or mount a 3" plate using the rail. Keep us informed on your progress.
Here are some pics of that cut off stock.

Thanks guys, Iowa Fox’s .243 Match Pistol build 07/21/2016 on this site inspired this project. When I ordered the stock I asked for a 2nd or a blemished stock for $125.00 that looked good to me compared to $ 228.00 for a none blemished stock.
