Scope mounts for Savage model 16
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and Savage rifles period. I'm looking for bases for a Savage model 16 in a308/w AccuTrigger. Tried Leupold but it hangs over breech/ejection port. YUK !!!!
Anybody have any suggestions? No cheap Millet/weaver stuff had problems before. Here are a few pics to describe what I'm up against. Looks like the rear of the receiver is higher/bigger than the front. I'm on my 3rd trip to the store {they're sick of me already ,-) }.
Please help if anybody has the same firearm.
THANKS.

Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
Looks to me like you have a mis-matched set of bases. Just looking at the pic it's clear to see the non-extended piece is a lot thinner than the extended one. Actually, it looks like your extended base is for an older flat-top action as it clearly doesn't follow the contour of the action.
Might try Warne steel bases (#M902 for standard or #M904/M905 extended).
Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
Maybe I'm turning into a "Scope Snob" but I really like Burris Signature Rings and a good one piece Weaver/Picattiny style base. You can't go wrong with a Badger Ordnance base (on the stainless 16FLHSS) but the Murphy Precision base I've been using on my 10FLP is pretty good too.

I even use Signature Rings on my 22s!

Warne bases are great too, I used a two piece set on my Model 11 with Burris Medium Signature Rings.

+1
Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
+1 - definitely looks like a set for the flat rear (older style action).
+1 - Burris signature rings go on everything I build.
Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
Bring them back to the store, they are not for your rifle.
If you want try the EGW rail $40 and you can order direct from them (site sponsor).Or try the burris XTR along with the XTR rings, just remember to order or buy for the round receiver or some label Accu-Trigger model.
Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
As has been pointed out those or for the pre accutrigger rifle. I like dual dovetail rings and bases because they're rock solid and tough. As far as I know Burris is the only company currently manufacturing dual dovetails for the 10/110 actions
Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
I also like the dual dovetail Burris bases and signature rings on hunting rifles. I have them on 3 different hunting rifles and they are rock solid. I have a set on my daughter's model 16 lefty, and they're great. From this point going forward, it's all I plan on using for hunting rifles. I prefer the Warne 1 pc picatinny rails and Warne "tacticool" rings on my target rifles.
As has been said, the store keeps selling you the wrong base sets. Most base packages will state on them if they are for round rear, or flat rear receivers on the Savage rifles. If not, they should have a parts catalog that they can use to look up the correct base for you.
Re: Scope mounts for Savage model 16
Thanks to all for viewing and replying. I'm definitely taking them back to the store.
At first, I thought it might be the receiver was "high" by the bolt but after reading your replies, it was the rear mount was the wrong one.
I'm now looking at a few different options that you all have suggested.
Thanks again. Awesome forum BTW. ;)
