My new Savage bolt knob jig
I'm so happy this worked out I have to show the world ;D. I just got to thinking about making a jig for Savage bolt handles and it seems to have worked out pretty well. I took a piece of 1" round, cut an angled shelf, drilled&tapped a 1/2-13 hole, welded on a couple 1/4-20 nuts for set screws and it works. Sorry the pictures suck ..... I probably ought to put more effort into learning how the camera works.

:D
Outstanding! I have a mini-lathe, and do what I can with it, but I wish I had a milling machine and welder (and requisite skills to use them well!)
Nice job! I for one am impressed!
What's your next project? Please keep the rest of us advised.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Very, very well done. Always have a mchinist or tool and die maker as a best friend, LOL

Buy a 110 volt wire feed welder. Watch for the Sears/Craftsman brand to come on sale. I use mine for quick jobs that I don't want to fire up the MillerMatic for.
Flux wire works well without gas.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
I have a wire feed, and am competent in stick and tig (including sanitary purge welding). There are a few houses around me for sale, preferably someone that likes shooting and owns a lathe......
I also have access to a private range......

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Hello,
Nice jig. What angle did you cut the flat on it? Or does it matter, depending on what angle you want the bolt to swing in relation to the rifle bolt?
Thanks, Larry
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
That's way easier than having to index one in a 4 jaw.

The flat is about 10 degrees, but I've found I need to add a set screw to adjust the angle. Turns out all Savage bolt handles are not consistent.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Those are some nice looking handles. Way to think outside the box with that jig.
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
So you are cutting threads on the bolt handle and screwing a piece of aluminum on and turning it down?

Yes

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Now that you perfected the jig, you could make some side money making, or modifying, bolt handles for forum members.

Forum policy prohibits that http://savageshooters.com/SavageForu...c,40264.0.html

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Dosen't have to be done through the forum. If he decides to do it, all potential customers need is his e-mail address. Keeps the forum out of it.

If you decide to travel down this road do a little checking on the laws. As my understanding you cannot work on or modify firearm parts without licensing. That's why when I made my bolt handle kits I was selling here at one time that they were not firearm specific and required some consumer installation, since you can work on your own firearms without license.

It does but it can be quite difficult to get the word out without a medium such as this. Just my bit of experience.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Most of these forums have similar rules, so it's not like this is a big surprise. This forum is a business and other businesses like NSS, Sin Arms, etc. pay to be vendors here. There is also the whole libility issue in our "land of lawsuits" not to mention the legal issue of earning income from it. I have no problem taking care of the local guys or other emails, but the forums have rules and we all agree to them when we log in. I posted my project to share it and show how simple it can be. Hopefully it motivates others to do the same and share their ideas. Thanks for the compliments. I'm pretty happy this project worked as well as it did.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
It did turn out good it looks like and those handles are nice. I hope it wasn't taken that I was attempting to be a "kill joy" or speak badly in anyway with my above comment, I just wanted to share my experience since I have dealt with this before here as a little side venture. I figured it might save you a couple of headaches.
Great work.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
No ill feelings at all, boots. I also posted the same pics on the Sniper's Hide forum and the thread got deleted. Forums are fun, but they are also businesses for some. I really don't have the free time to start any side business anyway.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Nice looking work Scott ! Now if you could just design tooling to convert Savage/ Stevens bolts to incorporate Sako/ M-16 type extractors. Hmmmmmm Bet you wouldn't have any trouble selling the tooling ;)
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
i bet that jig would sell well. i agree with everyone else, great idea, nice execution
and that thread on the hide was deleted because someone linked a .gov photo in their signature and it was causing a pop up login screen when people got to the thread
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
I might just build an extra jig or 2 to see if there is any interest. I don't think selling a couple of those would break any forum rules.
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
what would you charge for the jig ;D
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
I listed a jig in the classifieds to see if anyone really wants one.
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Honestly you don't need an FFL or manufacturors license to make parts like bolt handles, triggers, or other mods. You just can't install them on the "firearm". If the part isn't regulated by the ATF they don't care. If you needed a license to make a part then everybody who sold them would need one as well. You just can't take a firearm into your possession to install the mod. Now that does not speak to business concerns. There could be some liability involved and you might be required to get a business license depending on your local law or sales volume. If you were doing a lot of this it might be worth looking into something like an LLC to protect your personal assets. That of course is all up to you. Love the jig and the outcome you are getting. As a complete unit those have come out really clean. Great job!

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
I would love to have one of the bolts from the last photo..

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Me too those are really nice. Fantastic work.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Ok donors of bolts for said projects do they get a discount?

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Here's a pic of one on a stainless handle uncoated. The stock handle and tape measure are for reference.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
I have a 7x10 (7x12?) mini lathe. Do you think that is big enough to work on a bolt handle...or do you think I would need a larger (i.e. more rigid) lathe?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I can't answer that as I've never owned or operated any other lathe besides the one I have now. I'm guessing you'd be fine, but maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
It really should be, but without seeing your set up in person, I will say that i usually keep my cut depth on the lighter side when using those mini-lathes.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Nice looking fixture. What RPM do you turn at?
It looks like I just found me another project.
Is it made with mild steel or something that can be heat treated. I love making any kind of useful gadgets.
Thanks.

I made it from a piece of 1" mild steel, but it wouldn't matter. The angle is 11 degrees. I don't know what RPM it's turning at. I bought an old South Bend lathe last year and started playing. Those details like RPMs, SFPM, and feed rates are still beyond me. I just know how to make bolt knobs and install muzzle brakes ;D

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
I got me a jig made and turned my first bolt. Works really well, Thank you for the idea.
I did not realize how hard these handles are? It was some slow cutting until I got past the hardend part.

I got the 7x10 and plan on trying this some time.

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Make sure you have carbide tooling, as these bolts are hard!!!! The center of the bolt is softer, but that outside portion is tuff. It will also be easier to dial in with a 4 jaw chuck. Other then taking it slow ,you should be able to do this. I think the next one I do, I will grind it down before I chuck it in the lathe, just to get past the case hardened portion.
-
Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
It helps to gring the outer layer down on a belt sander or with a grinder. The polished blue ones seem to be the hardest coating to get through. Be prepared to find air pockets inside as well!

Re: My new Savage bolt knob jig
Here's one I got a little creative with. I call it my Turbo knob. It's kinda hard keeping the flutes perfectly even, but overall I'm pretty satisfied with it. I also made one with 4 larger flutes that I like even more.

The biggest problem with those mini lathes is they are grossly underpowered. Even the South Bend lathes usually have only a 110V, 3 phase motor. My fathers was one and only the lightest feeds worked worth a darn.
