I'm a noob, want to know what I should be shooting for as far as accuracy goes, and what shoots good. Mine is .223. I can get 1" @100, not good beyond, planning a scope upgrade. I'd like to be able to whack little varmints at 200, maybe more.

I have an axis in a .223, topped off with a nikon pro-staff 3-9x40 BDC. I'm shooting ultramx 52 grn. hallow points, this seems to be a very good setup for my gun. I can cover a 3 shot group with a quarter at 100 yds., and have been using it for preditor hunting all winter. Last weekend I took my son gopher hunting and was 16 gophers for 16 shots, all over 100 yds. some out to 260-270 yds. This is shooting off a bi-pod of course. Very happy with this setup!!!!

I forgot to mention I also installed a Rifle Basix trigger set at 2#, in my opinion that is the modification that made my gun a real shooter!!

I can get under a half inch at 100 yds and 1" at 200 yds with 55gr Nosler ballistic tip bullets over 25 grains of H335. I used a redfield 3-9X40 and just put on a redfield 4-12X40 since shooting long range is definitely a possibility. With Sierra 55gr GameKings I can get just under an inch at 100 and about 1.5 inches at 200 with 25 grains of H335.

For quality scopes, look into Redfield and Vortex Diamondback scopes. At right around $150 - $200 you get a great scope that will compete with many "high end" scopes. Leupold is a good line of scopes (Redfield is made by Leupold).

I have a Sightron SII Big Sky 6.5-20x-50mm scope with Burris bases and
ring. I will use the optic when I upgrade my rifle so it's worth getting the
best optic you can. I'm hand loading 75gr Hornady match bullets with Varget
powder. Off of a bipod and rear bag prone I'm getting groups at 100 yards
that can be covered with a nickel and 2 inch groups at 300 yards consistently.
Yes with others there to see it before any one asks. The Edge shoot amazing
for the money with the right setup and practice. I will update when I get out
to the local military range and can get out to 800-1000 yards.
Before anyone asks, no I didn't buy the Edge for the purpose of shooting LR target. I had it already and when I upgrade I will still use it for varmit hunting. If I was going th buy a rifle to build on it would be a Stevens 200. The action can be used to build an excellet LR target rifle.
I inherited one chambered in .223. I was unsure the first time I took it to the range. I got it sighted in at 50 yards. I shot 9, 5 shot groups. Using: 1. American Eagle Tactical 55 grain. 2. PMC 55 grain. 3. Remington UMC 55 grain. The Remington was all over the place. The Federal and PMC gave me tight groups. I had one group smaller then a dime, and one smaller then a nickle. For a $300 budget rifle, I was quite surprised. If anyone complains about the accuracy, sorry to say, learn to shoot. I ditched the cheap Bushnell scope, and bought a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5x14x40, mounted with Burris signature rings. I got the Nikon sighted in today. Then moved to 100 yards. The wind was bouncing the target around, so I need to go back on a calmer day.

When you get some rounds your edge/axis really likes, your dime group will be your 100 yd shots are your nickel group will be your 200yd groups.Quote:

Just an update, I made it to a practice day for Fclass. We only shot at 600 yards as it was foggy and raining. I shot 25 rounds, 2 sighters and one I pulled that was a 4. The rest where 5's, that is the Bull ring ;D . So far I'm impressed. Hopefully the next practice at the beginning of June we will get out to 1000. I also installed a cheek rest which has helped. I have done a little tweaking but it's still a stock rifle with stock parts.

How did you modify the but pad?
The cheek rest is made by TacPro, it is their Remington 700 style rest. They also make a wider version for the HS precision style stocks. The rests are made in Ontario near Niagra Falls. I got it though a dealer here in Canada. I modified the but pad with a very sharp box cutter. I just cut along the ribbed part and left only the rubber covering. I didn't like the length of pull. If it was a caliber with more recoil I wouldn't have cut it. I think if you wanted to custom fit the stock you could cut it and epoxy wood in the end and mount a standard pad and just sand it to size. It works well for now.
Cool that works. What did it shorten your pull length to? I like the wood idea being 6'2" with long arms usually means most rifles are to short for me.
I beleive it shortened the pull about 3/4". It was just enough to make it comfortable for shooting prone.

I took a bore sited, new .243 Axis out for its first shots. It took the first six shots to adjust scope at 100 yards. Shots seven, eight and nine all touched at 100 yards. Now that is out of the box accuracy with 100g Remington core-lokts.
I lowered the trigger pull from eight pounds to four and one-half. That should put three shots in a dime.
I placed a laser on the scope to kill hogs at night, so it better be accurate.
