Why is the group buy always a 26" varmit? Is there not enough interest in a sporter or maybe a mag contour.

Funny you post this.. I just sent him a pm about a half hour ago with the same exact question. I have been eyeing up all the group buys going on, but like you I want something other than the length and contour that is offered.
If he doesnt see this i will post his response to my pm.
I know gunshack has said before thats how er shaw keeps the price so low. Minimal options and processing of the barrels. It takes less time to turn a barrel to varmint contour than it would to turn down to sporter or mag contour. But i personally wouldnt mind seeing a few group buys in diff contours as well as maybe length. I dont mind for the price to be a bit higher for a choice of contour
.brian
I agree about the price, I also woundnt mind paying a little more. I dont mind the the wieght but a 26" barrrel on a walking coyote rifle is not real handy. I would love to see 22" in a mag or sporter.
+1
the weight of a varmint contour isnt my biggest concern since i hunt in blinds anyway but 26" is kinda long to be moving around in a blind. 22" IMO is a great length for most applications. Ever since i got my first mag contour from mcgowan last year ive liked it over sporter. Im not a bench or competition shooter by any means but it helps w groups by being a little stiffer than a sporter contour.
My 280 AI has #5 Brux on it and I love it, heavy enough but not a boat anchor either. its a little heavier than a mag but not much.
Okay, I hear you guys. Personally I want to see a sporter contour next so I can built me a new hunting rig, but the demand so far has been on varmint contours. When I put in the orders with ER Shaw, I have to place it for a single bore, contour, and steel type. The ONLY thing I get to specify is different chambers. They will not take any other requests on these bulk orders. Keep in mind that a barrel can easily be cut down in size and recrowned at minimum cost at a later time. I'm working with a local machinist and hope to be able to offer that as an option in the future.
Please take a minute to put in a vote on the Gun Shack board to express your opinions and help me decide. I actually have three polls running right now, one on the usual varmint contour, one for large shank, and one now for sporter/magnum.
Sporter/Magnum Poll: http://savageshooters.com/SavageForu...c,48404.0.html
Small Shank Varmint Poll: http://savageshooters.com/SavageForu...c,48395.0.html
Large Shank Varmint Poll: http://savageshooters.com/SavageForu...c,48354.0.html

My vote is for a magnum or heavy magnum contour. Length doesnt matter that much, but 24" is probably a good medium. If you want it shorter, easy to get cut and recrowned. I would jump all over a 6.5 in a heavy magnum, or magnum. Maybe even a 7mm. Either at 22 or 24" would make a sweet deer rifle, that you could also put a few round through at the range!
Same here......except maybe in 6mm cal. 243ai and 6mm rem ai sound tempting........even maybe a 7-08 could he tempting.
Brian
Stainless magnum profile in 338 caliber for me.

22 or 24 inch stainless magnum contour would be awesome.....especially in a 6.5 or 30cal.
Glad to see im not the only one with this thought. thanks for taking the time to address this I hope it works out.
My vote is for 6mm bore......I really want to build a 243AI
Thanks Again
I think the previous poll for the 30cal had a lighter weight option, I think me and the few posting here at most voted for it :'(
So far its the Sporter Stainless and Magnum Stainless with the most votes. The Magnum has a slight lead. One of the disadvantages to the sporter would be that we can't chamber it in any of the magnum calibers.
Stainless magnum in 20 cal ;D ;D
Would really like to see a large shank group buy. 223 or 6mm or 6.5. Can find a reason to but at least two barrels in any of those calibers. Would also love a bull barrel option. Real easy to turn that contour for er shaw. I do mostly bench type shooting so length is of no concern.
I just hope that Gunshack doesn't cancel the whole idea of a large shank group buy because of the people voting "I don't want a large shank group buy". I know I would also like oneQuote:

Brian
I am guessing there is some minimum number that need to be ordered for the group pricing, so if you large shank guys show enough intrest they will probably do a group buy for you.Quote:

Does anyone know what the minimum order number is. I'm good for at least two large shank and maybe another one. Also have a couple guys I shoot with that use PTA's so they are also interested in large shank. I just don't want to have to order small shanks. That get's me into different actions and logistically a pain to figure what goes with what. Just easier to do all one shank size
Yes, the minimum is 25. On some of these we have not met the 25 and I end up keeping them in inventory. That has not really been a problem yet since small shanks move pretty quick. But I don't want to get stuck with a bunch of large shanks that don't get spoken for.Quote:

Depending on the chamberings I would be interested in at least 2 LS barrels. The heavier the contour the better.
These group buys are going to dent my bank account, lol, can think of multiple calibers I want, cant wait to see what the next offers are.
Any chance of a full bull group buy thid year? After thr large shanks of course...
The next group buy will be another small shank 6mm in a stainless varmint contour:

For those of you wanting other specs, don't be discouraged. I'm working on getting at least two or maybe even three additional group buys going in the next 30 days. I'll be putting up some new polls to help decide.

Lance
on the new 6mm group buy,
i hope the 6mm rem br is a 6br norma
drybean
Great....now to decide between a 243 ack or 6mm rem ack!?! Im leanimg towards the 243 mostly cuz i already have the 243 go gage since i have a 260. Decisions decisions........
Brian
I'm good with a full bull large shank group buy ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D all of my tgt actions are bench guns anywayQuote:

So far the 6.5's have a slight lead, but even those only have 7 votes. Are any of you looking for 2+ on the 6.5's if we go that route?
Regards,
Lance
I could easily do two in the 6.5mm and may even do two in the 6mm.
I saw the 6mm-06 was one of them. They need to go ahead and make that a 6-06ai
I am getting burnt out on the 6.5s, would buy one or two 7s or one or two 6s, but no 6.5s.
I just signed up for the May 6.5 in 260 Rem. Can't wait to get it.
I guess 32 stainless magnum votes(with 15 more heavy magnum and 20+ sporters) wasnt enough to get a group buy goin, but were tryin to push 7 votes for a large shank??? Im a little confused.
Is the hold up that they wont do a sporter/magnum group buy and just prefer varmint contours?
I am very sorry. The only hold up has been my time as I have been extremely busy the last few weeks. We are going to do a magnum group buy and I just need to know what caliber to order. Please vote here:Quote:

Awesome man! Hopeing for a 6.5 creedmor in Magnum SS.
If this turns out to be a 6.5, what chambering will that be? I am new to the 6.5 chambers and am a bit confused since there appears to be several.
I think you will have your choice of many chamberings. I does look like yet another 6.5 caliber offering, :'( so I may just be saving a little bit of money. I really did not need to be buying another barrel right now, I have 3 that I have yet to fire already. But, if a 30 cal was chosen, I feel obligated to take one of them since I have been voting that way for a while now.
Are we close yet?
Can you do additional work on these or are they some sort of direct ship? ;D
Garett
I would love one in either a 308 or 260. I hope something goes through...
Yes, we will be doing a 6.5 magnum now. The order was put in with Shaw yesterday and I'll be posting a link later in the week so you can pre-order and select a chamber.Quote:

Thanks for the quick reply Lance, I'll find a local guy to shorten and re-crown. Looking forward to the new barrel.
Garett
Hoping for a larger caliber sporter type soon, 7mm, 30, or 338 for a big game build, may pick up a 6.5 but not sure may just wait and see if they offer a larger caliber in the future.
Another 6.5???? DANG!!!! :'(
When will we be able to put in our order?
I am ready to take orders now here:Quote:
