Ok, I know I have seen it before but can't find it!
What size tap and what size drill bit do I need to make my own cases to fit my Hornady COAL tool?
Thanks,
Dennis

If I am not mistaken I believe the thread size is 5/16 X 36 thread
Yes 5/16 X 36 and use a 19/64 drill bit to drill out the primer
This info could stand to be a sticky note.
Where do I have to look to find a 5/16 36? I see a lot of 32, but no 36.
I had to buy a set of three, that's three drill bit's and three taps from a specialty company. I looked and ask people for a week before I found them!
If you want a set, set me know. Their brand new with the plastic coating still on them. I could let a set go for $25.00, inc shipping.
They are very hard to get, but I just finished cutting one of my 338 edge case and it works perfectly with the Hornady/Stoney tool!
I see them in Enco catalog $12.95, Online @ use-enco.com
Where were you last month?Quote:

Last month i was having major surgery, Now just siting around.
I have a couple extra set! I may part with them, I over nighted them, plus ordered them from a speciality warehouse! NONE were in the state of Louisiana. I might be able to part with two of he sets (drill bit, and tap), up front, I will ship them to the lower 48 for $30.00 a set!
If the demand is there, I would order a big lot of them if there were enough people intersted in them! Maybe they would be a litte cheaper!

I bought my tap from Victor for $8.50.
Their shipping is a bit high for single items but I had other stuff to buy at the same time.

I think that's where they got me, but I have my drill and tap! They work!!!!!Quote:

Just talked to enco, they don't sell the 5/16X36. Victor sells em for a good price, but you have to order $25 worth of items plus shipping before you can order from them.
I know this thread is old, but I have a question: what did you guys use to hold the case steady without damaging it while you drilled out the primer pocket? I have tried this without much success using vice grips, a bench vise, my hand, etc.
I used the 3-jaw in my lathe.
I use a 2x4 split down the middle, I then drill a hole in the middle of the seam the size of the brass, put it in a vise and drill. Usually there is enough tension to drill with no issues, if it doesn't hold the brass, then cut another hole one size smaller.
Good info.Quote:

Catalog # 1-372-150 5/16-36 tap, $7.32 each. no min order.
I do not recall shipping cost but it was reasonable.
For those of us that don't have a $20,000 lathe, put the case in a hammer bullet puller and then put that into a vice. Enco dose have the tap, #891-4932 on page 89 at $14+. I uses a ElChepo Harbor Freight table top drill press ($40 in 1985?) like the one that T/C used to chamber Contender barrels.
you think there a bit off? :)Quote:

I just received a tap and die from JTS. The 'shopping cart' price for both was about $20.00. I finished up the the checkout info and never saw a price on shipping and their website kept defaulting my preferred shipping to UPS over USPS. OK, so I complete the deal. 3 days later my goods arrive (by UPS) and the invoice inside shows a shipping charge of almost $10.00!!!! HOLY COW!! This is from Ohio to Iowa. I had a rather lengthy discussion with their customer service-pleasant but no concessions. The package weighed 5 ounces and the online USPS site quoted $2.30.
Bottem line folks, watch your wallet when dealing with JTS--Use their dime and call in the order so you can know all the charges--or better yet, shop for another source. I will next time. Steve
I was critisized for the above post . . . too high! . . . but I have had several people contact me after they found out how much it actually takes to get them to "your door"!Quote:

No company wants to ship a small order.
They can be had from Manhattan Supply Company aka MSC Supply. I bought one of the stubby TIN coated drill bits the tap was standard high speed steel. Their standard UPS ground usually comes next day.

I have a four jaw on my WOOD lathe and a drill bit fixture to hold my forstner bits for when i make my round boxes
Under $10 shipped on eBay.
Are they available now?Quote:

Yep.
Do a search for 5/16-36
Above is Tap only.
I bought the Titanium drill bit which cost a few $$$$, but should last forever.
Otherwise, that's a good price on the Tap!
Drilling brass HSS should last forever.
