How do these 2 compare as far as case capacity/efficiency?
The 6-284 has a bigger boiler room and is a true SA cartridge whereas the 6 Rem AI is an intermediate length cartridge not particularly well suited to the confines of a SA mag box.
I'm picking up a long action and am torn between these 2 for a build.I already have brass and dies for a 6mm Rem.,and I won't have to do any case forming.
if you already have the stuff to do a 6mm ai them do one of those i have seen some good things from thos with other people.
i am going from a 243ai to the 6-284 i should be getting my barrel in a week to 3 weeks. cant wait to get it loaded up and shooting.
I like both my 6 rem ( 1"@200 from a 17" barrel ) and 6 rem AI. Also my 6br. I got these after hearing the 6-285 has a shorter life and can be finicky to get small groups.
I have a 243 & .243AI also, but not done much with then. Thinking 6mm-06 down the road.
What's the best brass for 6mm Rem. Ackley? Probably not made by Nosler or Lapua are they?
I have no experience with the 6mmAI but I agree with Blue that the 6-284 can be finicky. I used mine for F-class and it shot good on certain days and not so good on others. I only got 800rnds down my 6-284 before the throat was gone.
I believe the longer 6mm neck would help with the throat erosion but it is just a theory based on my random thoughts! :D

No recommendations on brass? :-\
If you're already working on a long action, why not go with a 6mm-06?
Don't feel like turning necks and don't need the small velocity gain.
Well if you do a -284 you're coming down from .264, (presumably) which is .007" more than if you use .25-06 brass... Just food for thought...
I'm leaning towards the AI more all the time. Now if I can just find a good barrel w/o having to wait 6 mos.
6BR can be punched outQuote:

I love my 6mm AI. Use 6mm rem brass. Fire formed while doing load developement then annealed. Cases have never needed trimming as they will shorten upon fire-forming. 40* nk means almost "O" case stretch & very little bolt thrust. Mine is a twelve twst "critter gitter" shooting 70 & 75 grain bullets. About 1200 rounds through it to-date. Minimal throat erosion & expect at least another 1200 rounds based on present wear. Started w/ Redding dies & got lousy concentricity w/ neck sizer 'til I bought a Lee collet. Which got me to shooting bug holes. RL-19 also woke this cartridge UP! Obviously the choice is yours. But if I had a "do over" I'd stick w/ the 6mm AI. Good luck with your decision :)
I'm actually looking for a varmint contour but they're only showing it in bull(too heavy).I could pre-order one from gun shack but not sure about Shaw quality to be a tack driver.
You might check w/ Krieger. They show BBL inventory on line. When I built my .257AI they just happened to have the perfect bbl "ready to go". They will set up for bbl nut or standard shoulder & also chamber if you'd like.
Gotcha,
Did you have to special order your Lee collet die? I have a 6mmAI barrel ordered and am getting ready to purchase all of my reloading components. Any knowledge you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam
Got in on the pre-ordrer at Gun Shack for a 6mm Ackley. Now just need to wait and start getting supplies.
Has anyone fire formed 257 Roberts bass for the 6mm AI?
NO, why? is it better for any reason over the 6mm brass?Quote:

I've heard the 257 Roberts brass will last longer, just wondering if anyone has tried it. My plan is to start with the 257 Roberts brass since I'm buying new anyway.
Good dope on the 6AI.

So I used 257 and created a good tight false shoulder to fireform against.
