Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
Well, I shoot 40 & 55 NBT's, and 55 V-Max's yesterday.
I am not finished with the NBT's, but check out the 55grn V-Max group. Shot several likewise!
I messed up with one round, it should have been in there with the other 4 :o

I found the 40grn NBT's to be the PIA!!!!! I can't say the 55 V-max's were any trouble, pretty easy! NBT 55grns were easy also!
Now I am just getting started with my 223 also, so someone will have to tell us if the 55's will do dumb things past 250yds!

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
Don't know what went wrong, all I could do is go by the Nossler Reloading manual! Maybe 3" groups! 40 nbt's
28.0 grns area seemed a little hot for them!
If you have something, let me know. They were the hardest to load out of all I tried! 28.0 almost filled up the case! FYI

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
Never tried them in a 1-9 have a 1-12 that shoots them clean @26.2V and 40 horn vmax not sure what seating depth but yea 28 sounds real hot I load a buddies 204 with cci 400 27.6V and it's a shooter depth not certain will check later an send numbers

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
Nossler listed some pretty compressed loads for the NBT 40's, I will try some with a lower charge!
Look at the last picture I sent. On the lower right corner is one groups showing with 40 nbt's. This was probably the better one, 27.7grns. 28.0 definetly opened up more!

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
Yea in my 1-12 I'm using
26varget
cci-400
2.276" oal
Shoots small holes

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
ok dennis I finally got to the range today with 8-12 mph wind gusts. and shot some targets at 100 trying carefully to read the wind before squeezing the shots off. I bought some benchmark powder to try now my results: this model 10 @ 100 fired 3-3shot groups with lc-11 brass cci-400 and 25 gns of benchmark with 55nbt's very promissing results. will test further the best group of the 3 were seated at 2.290" oal. produced nice group.
So after i got done testing some other rifles i had worked up loads for i set down at the 300 yard line and bagged the rifle to see what it would do just for grins (had to clean it anyways).
shot 25.5H4895
CCI-400
LC-11 BRASS 2X
55NBT
im not gonna lie when i say i was impressed..... something to try if you havent the 55nbts i have been told are a bit heavier jacket but to stretch a 223 out past 3-400 yards its gonna take a bit heavier bullet id think.

Going to try the above! I do favor NBT's over V-Max's!
I have been pretty busy with our match two weeks ago, then Easter Rolls around! I will be testing the 223 soon!

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
70 grain Berger VLD seated 0.010 off the lands, 24 grains H-4895, Lapua brass, Federal 205M primer. Groups around 1 inch at 300 yards from my model 12, 1-9 twist. ;D

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
That blasted plate again 1shot I have a question... I know they say that 3proves the load and 5 the shooter I've always shot 5 shot groups is it better for 3 or 5 and after you get a 3 shot string like that do you say it's good or go back and load up 10 or 5 or???? I'm curious

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em

In all 7 pages, no one shot any IMR 8208XBR,
I HAVE A SAV.M12 WITH A Shilen 1 in8 223 Wylde 26"
IT WILL SHOOT BUG HOLES, WITH 25.3 (55 VMAX)8208XBR
AT A 100 YDS.
ALL BARRELS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em

Re: 223 pet loads Lets see'em
After 2 range days @300 and 200 yds and eliminating the bad and the ugly, Varget 26.4 and 69 SMK .010" jump looks good. No pressure signs.
10 FCP-K minus the brake in .223
NOTE: THIS LOAD IS LISTED ABOVE MAX LOAD IN BOTH LEE AND HODGON MANUALS.

I would have figured with as many barrel nut's as there are there on this forum that maybe someone else was working with these as most savage heavy barrels are 1-9twist and my guns all shoot 69smk's just fine but i dont feel they work well on pdogs. as the box says for paper only i shot many last year at 5-6 yards that got hole punched and crawed off im looking for a more... "explosive" reaction.. ive also heard they stabalize 40's but havent tried them as i like a multi-purpose load coyote/prairie dog and has to be extreme powders.
I assume that you are talking about heavier bullets in Federal gold match ammo?
A potential reason that the match (and your results with 69gr bullets) work well is the twist.
The lighter stuff, especially when launched fast; are spinning extremely quickly. This isn't the best situation for accuracy.
The 22-cal Vmax bullets have a RPM ceiling of around 290,000RPM(per Hornady). IF you launched them @ 3500fps, that is 280,000RPM. IF you have a rougher bore, that may be close to destruction; but at the very least you are spinning the snot out of them. This can lead to an "over stabilized" wobble. Thus not the best groups. Dogtowns & Varmint nightmares are limited to about 3000fps in our barrels.

Tried them in 3 different Savage .223's. Nothing special. Shot about 20% larger groups than TAC in the same rifles.
May try it with the lighter bullets and hope for better results!
