Was out gopher shooting today and got to try out the 17 FB with Trail Boss on gophers. Load is a CCI 400 primer, Rem cases and 5.9 grains of Trail boss pushing a 20 grain Vmax out of a 26 inch barrel. It works wonders out past 200 yards.
Furthest shot was 248 according to the range finder. Much quieter than a full bore load but shoots pretty flat and definitely diappears the gophers. Not as explosive as a 30 grain Berger doing 3600 FPS or the 25 VMax doing 3900, but every bit as destructive and more, as a 17 HMR.
I was using the Bergers for shots over 250 yards and the Trail Boss loads under 250. The TB loads shot 1.5" low and .75" left of the Bergers at 100 yards. I have the gun sighted in for the Bergers, so as long as you pay attention it is pretty easy to adjust for the TB loads.
For those of you that want to use your 17 FB in place of your HMR I can highly recommend the Trail Boss load. Am going to load up some 20 and 25 VMax and 30 bergers, all over 5.9 and see what they actually Chronograph at. I know 3.7 is doing almost 1900 so my bet is 5.9 and the 20 should be 2700 or so. If anyone Chronographs some I would be interested to see your results.
I hope the last post helps
