I'm no expert and don't claim to be, but never give up on your hand loads, IMO with hand loads you CAN get moa in a factory Savage if you can do your part ;D

He is already getting .75 MOA
The point that I was trying to make before (admittedly not well) was that Mattri has a Stevens 200. Yes most are very accurate and some are exceptionally accurate. But, you have to accept the fact that it is a light weight sport rifle with a flimsy stock and a very average trigger. They are a great little rifle, but not a target rifle.
I think that the internet gun rooms have spawned a mentality that if a gun won't "shoot 1/2" all day long" it isn't worth keeping. A sporter that groups .75 is a great rifle, but Mattri is getting discouraged because it won't do .5
With a target stock, aftermarket trigger and barrel that .5 group or less is a reasonable expectation, provided your skills are up to the challenge. Also many of the Savage varmint/target models will achieve his goals.
I think we also do a disservice to the beginning shooter/reloader when we give exact loads.
45.3 gr. of HXXX with a 90 gr. XXX bullet
Sure, as experienced loaders, we know to load a range of powder weights that encompass the "magic" weight and find the right load for our rifle. The beginner, however, may just load that particular loads and if it doesn't shoot well, he is off to another powder/bullet combo, when his load may have been only 1/2 gr. away.
Mattri, you have a great little rifle there and if you enjoy looking for the perfect load, by all means, continue looking. Just remember that perfection is unattainable (no one has ever shot a .000 group) and that there are many more .5 groups are shot online than at the range.
End of rant and I appologize to anyone that I might have offended with this or my previous posts.
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
Thanks for all of the replies. Went to the range yesterday with two loads.
41 grns IMR 4350 75 grn Hornady V-Max shot .75 with my buddy getting one .6 something.
41grns IMR 4350 85 grn Sierra HPBT shot lots of .75 but best of the day was .428, I have a pic but no photobucket acct, is there another way to post images?
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
Matt, if it was me from here I'd play with seating depth, you WILL see a difference and more then likely a good one. After that work on that trigger. Have fun.
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
Along with continuing loading and experimenting with loads to come up with the one
your rifle likes best, a good stock bedding job may very likely help. Never heard of a
properly done bedding job hindering accuracy, but has helped many a rifle in the
accuracy department.
Photobucket is free to join. All ya have to do is go there and sign up.

Here's my target from the range the other day. Thanks for the replies and suggestions.
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
...When are you going to bump it.. ???
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
It certainly looks like it's coming around matt, keep it up.
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
1shot- going to bump the powder charge next time out. Now that I can post pics will show the results.
Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
It looks like you have the basic load, now it's time for the fine tuning, seating depth, small incremental charge weight adjustments etc. Make sure you only change one thing at a time so you will know what works and what doesn't. If you don't already have one a chronograph is a really great accuracy tool IMHO, you can see what every round is doing when you fire it. I think you are shooting great groups buy the way, I know there is a lot of talk about rifles that "shoot 1/2" all day long" and there are some that will but in my nearly 40 years of reloading and serious shooting any sporter weight rifle that will do it is a rare bird indeed.

Ordered a SSS trigger, going to bump the load and see where we're at.

Re: need load to get stevens 200 .243 under.5
possum1- Probably true for a lot of us back in the day:) Just taking what seems like the next logical step in load development, tried dropping the charge, now I'll try bumping it.
