Proper Action Torque

Two of the things I have found that have helped the accuracy of my BRJ are bedding the action and a 1/8" thick bottom metal from either DIP or www.savagegunsmithing.com. The one from Savagegunsmithing comes fully finished, the other does not.

When you add these two things, most people tend to torque their actions too much. I have found that on most Savage rifles with the bedding and heavy bottom metal that just torquing the bottom metal snug, about 8 inch pounds gives the best accuracy. Your rifle may like a little more, but try just snugging the action into the stock. The bedding and heavier bottom metal alone decrease group size and there is no need for pillars with the heavy bottom metal and the bottom metal protects the stock unlike the stock thin metal that chews up what little wood is at the bottom of the stock.

With an unaltered rifle, I'm not sure if less than the 15 inch pounds recommended will increase accuracy, but you can sure try.
In any case, going over the 15 inch pounds usually hurts the accuracy.
