indexing a conventional shouldered barrel
Ok, i know this is Savage country, and i am in the process of building three (plus own one factory)!!! But on a rem 700, if the bbl is removed, then nitrided (NOT changing any diminsions) will the bbl index to the same place after reinstall? Resaon i'm asking, had a custom rifle done by Kampfeld, and am thinking about nitriding the bbl....but had some custom engraving on the barrel, and would like it to remain visible.....another question...this rifle has maybe 40-60 rounds thru it, is that to much out of a 300 RUM to still have it nitrided? Thanks , rsbhunter
Re: indexing a conventional shouldered barrel
I don't know about your nitriding question but if you're putting the same barrel back on the same action it should index correctly.
Re: indexing a conventional shouldered barrel
Yes, th same parts, just removing for the nitride process.....Thanks, Russell
Re: indexing a conventional shouldered barrel
How much wear after 40-60 rounds would depend on the loads that have been shot through it but even if they were hot I don't think there would be much to worry about. Everything will line up fine when you put it back together.
