Simmons 3-9x40
Found a bargain on a budget scope today. Found a Simmons 3-9x40 8 point. Thinking about putting it on my Savage 110 7mm.
Is this scope going to hold up to the hammering of a magnum?
I have a coupe of rimfires that I have put the Simmons 22 mag scopes on and found they are a functional scope for bushy tails, but just not sure of the durability of the 8 point.

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
The 8 point was the Savage Bargain scope that came on the package guns (or at least thats what the 243 package gun I had came with) I still have it on a 22, its ok but its clarity is not great. I know most people that get guns with the package scope on them take it off first thing. Mine is holding up to the 22, held up to the 243 Sporter. I would think that if you get it, plan on it being a "good enough for now" until you can afford something better.

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
Keep it away from the brow or you will be sorry. Ask me how I know, not a fan of simmons scopes on any centerfire with any recoil cause you have to crawl inside them to get a good picture compared to other brands.

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
guaranteed until it brakes. I have had more expensive scopes brake, only because i own more, but they all can brake. put it on and use it until you decide it needs replacing.

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
It's not heavy enough to use as a door stop, a paper weight maybe...a garbage bag weight for sure. A bargain on that scope would be someone paying you to take it.

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
Bushnell 3200 3x9's are going for pretty good prices these days and are long enough to fit Savage long actions with the weaver extended base on the front. front #402, rear #46. The scope is also pretty good and a lifetime warranty. Simmons are what they are, good luck getting anyone to honor their "lifetime" warranty these days.

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
Greetings.
Some other options might be:
SWFA SuperSniper in 6x - fixed
Vortex Crossfire series
Vortex Diamondback series
Vortex Viper in 2-7x32 can be had for as low as $149.99 right now and the 3-9x40 is $299.99
The above all come with exceptional, no B.S. warranties.
Vortex is just down state from me and when I find some time, I plan on visiting them and hopefully get a full blown tour of their business. When that happens, I will post a report of what I see and hear. Vortex is active at the Optics Talk forums, so they really seem to be customer service driven.
I have a 3-9x40 on one of my rifles right now. At 300 dollars, it is a great deal. It compares favorably (to my eyes) to my Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42, which was $90 more.
I believe that 82boy uses a Crossfire in some serious competition with great results.

Yeah, I'm drinkin' and lovin' the Vortex cool-aid these days, but they work well.
Blue Avenger's idea of using the Simmons as a stop-gap is a good one, but you might want to immediately start saving for a replacement. As others have pointed out, the Simmons' life span will likely be very short on your magnum.
I hope my ramblings helped.
Shoot safe,

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
I picked up one of these from Academy for $30 a couple of years ago for my 10/22.
I guess my expectations were pretty low because I was actually surprised by how good it was (relative to cost). The eye relief was very good and the scope was clear enough.
I ended up moving it to an M1 Garand using a Bsquare mount. It's been on there for about a year now and held up so far. Using this scope and hand loads I can shoot 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards pretty consistently which I consider pretty good for a CMP Service grade with a 44 receiver and a 53 barrel.
In addition I can see the 30cal holes at 100 yards.
YMMV

Re: Simmons 3-9x40
Some of the older Simmons scopes made in the Philippines were pretty good, it when they started making them in China the quality took a dump.
