Can someone tell me the Hornady data: 162 Amax for .284 Win

Can someone tell me what Hornady has for starting and max loads for the 162 gr Amax with H4350 and Reloder 15?

Might consider using Hodgdon's and Alliant's data for reloading. Both companies provide reloading data for free online. Google will be your friend. :)

Thank you both for that info. My issue is that I am loading 2 grs. below hodgdon's max load for the 162 gr Hornady BTSP and my primer pockets are loosening up after 2 firings. I'm curious what Hornady says for their 162 Amax. I'm loading 51.5 grs. of H4350 and after the second firing the primers are seating way too easily. I can even see a gas escape ring on my bolt face about the diameter of the primer. Bolt lift is not stiff though.?????

Kevin, The Hornady #7 man. has no data for RL-15 & 162 AMAX :'( W/ 24", 1 in 9" twst. Encore bbl. & rem. 9 1/2, 162 AMAX, H-4350 @ 38.9gr =2200fps, 41.3gr =2300, 43.6gr =2400, 45.9gr =2500, 48.2gr =2600, 50.5gr (max) =2700 Hornady shows RL-15 only in 100 & 120 gr boolits for 284 Win. Dale

Wow! That's 2 grains less than Hodgdon's 162 gr data for a different hornady bullet. I knew the numbers would be different but I didn't expect that much. I worked up to this 51.5 load and never saw any pressure signs until priming the brass after the 2nd firing...loose pockets! Shoots .3's to .6's out to 600 yds too.

Curious...what brand of brass?? Brand of primers?

Most brands and some lines within those brands, have different diameter primer cups.

Try about 52 gr of RL17.
Work up of course, but there are a few people running pretty hot loads loaded long, and getting around 3000 fps with a 26" barrel.

I've never loaded for 284 Win, so I'm afraid I can't help much with that one.

Unfortunately, bolt lift isn't always an indication of pressure issues. Loose pockets after 2 firings would be a problem for sure. I'm using Lapua 6.5x284 brass, and I have probably 5 or 6 (have to check) firings on my brass so far with good pockets. Are you using Winchester brass?

Are you measuring your case head expansion also? What kind of expansion are you getting in front of the extractor groove?

The Hornady #7 manual lists 50.5 grs of H4350 as Max. Without knowing your setup, many things can affect pressure. If your chamber is cut to a minimum spec, your barrel could develop pressure earlier than another barrel. Hornady used a TC Encore barrel for their "test barrel" for their loads. Your chamber could be cut smaller. Not bashing TC by any means, but different barrels have different characteristics. Thus the caveat to always work up to max everywhere you read in handloading. If you're seating your bullets at, or into the lands, you could also get pressure earlier in the powder range.

I would probably back off .5 grain on those loads and see how she goes.

Do you have a chronograph, and if so, what are your velocities running?

I've been using both Win. .284 and Lapua brass (necking up 6.5x284). Some of my most accurate loads have been obtained using Win. WLR primers. I checked the diameter of the WLR's and they're .001" smaller than Fed 210M. So, I started using the 210M's and I was still getting good accuracy. A few loadings later, those 210M's were pressing into the pocket way too easily. And forget about trying to use a WLR after using the 210M. The Win. brass was shooting great also but I thought maybe the Lapua brass would hold up better in the primer pocket...it hasn't.

Tonight I loaded a batch of new Lapua brass using the WLR primers. I loaded 15 rounds at 50.5 grs. After firing these I will be checking the primer pocket dimensions and seeing how easily the WLR primers seat after one firing.

I don't own a chrono, so I don't know the velocity. My chamber was reamed using a .284 match reamer so it is definitely on the small side.

Tammons: It's funny you mention 52 grs. of RL-17. I developed that same exact load using the 162 gr Amax and it shot a 3/4" 5 shot group at 400 yds but became too hot for my tastes when the temps went above 40 degrees. I tried dropping the charge weight to 50, 50.3, 50.5, 51, 51.5 and couldn't get anywhere near the accuracy this barrel is capable of. This sucker really seems to shoot its' best at higher pressures.
