I have a Savage 12FV in .223 that has about 7000 rounds through it and will no longer hold a 1" group at 100 yards. Will a set-back and re-chamber help? Is it even worth doing? Or should I replace it?

Might help some but after 7K i think you got your $$$ worth out of that one.
I have bought perfectly good "take off" barrels from the classifieds here for as little as $30.00. Can't do much machinework for that.

If you want to swap to another caliber it will depend on what your plan to use it for again.
I do have a 6x45 (6mmx.223) AR15 and its my go to coyote/Antelope gun & perfect to 400yds easy with a 65 or 70gr bullet.
I will be having sinman or jim turn me a 6x45 drop in bbl for my older FP10 also.
I'll be using it for prairie dogs and target. Something that's a longer range cartridge than .223.
I kinda like the idea of the 20 Practical. Then I can still use my 223 brass. But then I'm not sure I like the smaller bore.
I've thought about the .243 Winchester, but it'll burn out quicker.
If I go with a wildcat, I want it to be something simple.
243 Win is just too much gun for serious Prairie Dog shooting. Give that 20 Practical a good hard look. I have a 20 Vartarg and I love it.

The wind will move that 20 cal more. I have shot a bit of 20 practical in an AR15 a pal has, yes fast, wind tough...no. Can hit at 700yds yes, when its calm, I popped a few at 754 yds last year with it after about 18 shots missed due to wind at 26mph out there. It was fun anyway.Quote:

School me on this. Why would a rechamber only help some? What does it exactly mean when a barrel is 'shot out'? Is it just that the throat is worn down? If that is the case, then a rechamber to 22-250 would be like a new barrel? yes? no?
I'm cheap and don't want to just throw this barrel away if I can help it.
