Yes I'll be completely honest here I'm brand new to Savage Centerfire guns. I've always had Remington 700s but the ever growing accuracy and popularity of these rifles plus the ability to switch barrels so easily has persuaded me to give them a try. I'm planning on purchasing the 10 FCP HS Precision which of course comes in 308. What other cailbers will I be able to switch over to this action later? Just let me know guys, thanks for the help.

The answer to your question will be clear with a couple hours spent reading. Basically, the list of calibers you can't make with that action would be much shorter than the ones you can use. You can make it about anything save for maybe a 50BMG or a .338 Lapua
The .473 bolt face is pretty flexible; but, you're not even limited by that.
The reason a lot of folks like the Savage is the ability to try the cartridge of the moment without a huge investment.
There are two types of actions really; long and short.You gotta 10= short(110 = long). 11, 12, 14, 16 all short. 111, 112, 114, 116 all long. Two types of barrels; small and large shank (diameter where threaded).Realistically all callibers can be found in either shank configuration. 'cept maybe the really BIG shells....
Short actions with a bolt face .Dia of .470 +/-
225 Winchester, 22/250 Remingtion, 6mm Norma BR, 243 Win, 250 Savage, 260 Rem,
6.5/284 Norma, 7/08 Rem, 284 win, 300 Savage, 308 Win, 338 Federal, 35 Rem, and
the 358 Winchester.
Long actions with a bolt face .DIA of .470 +/-
220 Swift, 6mm Rem, 240 Weatherby Mag, 257 Roberts, 25-06 Rem,
6.5x55 Swedish, 270 Win, 7x57 Mauser, 7x64 Brenneke, 280 Rem, 30/06 Springfield,
8mm Mauser, 338/06 A Square, and the 35 whelen
Although any of the long action cartridges will work in the short action they just might not eject a loaded round.

Thats only a handful of them, best to ask about what you are interested in. For the most part there are three bolt face sizes, the 222 and everything that was derived from it, the 308 and all its brothers sisters and cousins, and the magnums. Thats my simple explanation, it will get you far. You can then compare the length of loaded round for the length of the action. The remington 40x is a short action and the chamber 300 win mags in that. It can work, just not always conveniently.
Ok thanks for the help. The main things i'm looking for are smaller varmint type calibers for now. I know 243 will be just a barrel change. Does anybody know if I will need to change magazines and bolts to go to a 223 and/or 22-250?
The "10" is a short action so limited to any round with an OAL of about 2.9" That includes anything based on a .308 case (.243 Win, .260 Rem, 7mm-08, .308, .338 Federal, .358 Win and any wildcat on this case), the 22-250 and any of it's parents or derivatives. the .284 Win and it's derivatives and anything else with a .473" head diameter that isn't longer than the above OAL.
It won't accept (at least as a repeater) any of the .30-06 based rounds or any of the magnums due to OAL limitations.
As above, the 22-250 will work fine. The .223 will require a bolt head change to match the smaller case head diameter and a magazine change to handle the shorter case.

Ok so with my 308 im thinking about 243, 223, 22-250, and maybe even 6.5/284. I know of course i'll be changing barrels. But which of these will I need to change mags and bolts for?
don't need to change bolts, just bolt heads (simple and inexpensive to do) between 22-250 and 223
308,243,22-250 will be just a barrel change. The 6.5-284 will not fit in the mag and will have to be shot as a single shot.Quote:

If all of these will be shot as a single shot then just get a single shot follower for the 308 magazine and you wont need the 223 magbox. A new complete bolthead for the 223 can be bought for about $50.
I know u said long action cartridges wont eject out of the short action which makes sense. But how would it work the other way around? For instance is it possible to make 308s and 22-250s work and eject out of a long action, like what would come on a 25-06?Quote:
