I think the Criterion Barrels are still too new to see much written yet. If this were Summer some of these guys would have several hundred rounds through one by now but this time of year is a little slow. Here is the name of one of the 1000 yard shooters from Minnesota that is shooting his 6.5X284 Norma Barrel by Criterion - Terry McQuoid - 320/630-3435. Terry is not a member on Savage Shooters so he will not be posting here. He has had a Criterion since November 2010. He currently has a couple hundred rounds down the tube. Told me his best groups were in the .2 range. Terry has a barrel on an evalution trial. He will answer questions from anyone willing to call him. He shoots all winter at a reduced capacity.
I am working with another shooter at this time to have a Criterion Barrel evaluated by the Savage Shooters Techinical writers. More on this as things progress.

Jim,
Are these barrels hand-lapped? Considering one for an F/Class rig for my son this year. Thanks, Tim
according to their site, they are lapped before chambering and crowning.

Have used several of the CMP sold Criterion's on my M1s - great barrels for the money (at least the M1 barrels they make).
Tiny 68,
Not only are they lapped but all of the Reamers were ordered in just for our barrels. All new and made to SAMII minimum spec dimensions. I spoke with the management at Criterion just a short time ago on this subject. They have some proprietary tricks that they do to their buttons prior to using them. The results give you a unique rifling land and a lower bullet drag. They also hold some of the tightest tolerances I have heard of with their chambering procedures.

That makes up my mind. One question regarding their button; is it modified to provide a "canted land" type of rifling?
Thanks,
Kevin
Any more on this?Quote:

I ordered one in 308. If I have enough time to get a load worked up and do some longer range shooting by the 19th, I'll be shooting it in a match. Either way, I'll have some experience with it by then.

Well,
I just purchased a Criterian from Jim at Northlander. It's a Savage drop-in, small flange, 28", 1:10 twist, bull. It will be mated to my Savage 10FP LE. My current rifle has a stock 24", 1:10 twist, heavy barrel.
The very week that I get it mated up, I will try to get it down to MCB Quantico, VA, Range 1 for some testing. I'm a qualified Range Safety Officer there and can open any range the Marines are not using on any weekend. If you live anywhere near Quantico, VA, I urge you to join the Quantico Shooting Club, and joins us. We have rifle ranges out to 1,000yds, along with barrel trap, international skeet and comp pistol ranges.
I cant wait to hear how these are shooting! Anyone know the diameter at the muzzle for the varmint and the heavy sporter? Trying to decide between the two, but I have been unable to find any info regarding muzzle diameters. Thanks!

The Muzzle dimensions are:
Varmint - .800
Heavy Sporter - .700
These dimensions are approximate and will vary by barrel length.

Thanks!
Ordered a 6.5X47 Lapua barrel from Jim just this week. I was anxious to hear how well they do but, since I'll have a Criterion in the next week or so, I'll find out myself.
I would have some results from shooting my 260 Rem CBI barrel this weekend...but Numrich twice sent me damaged stocks so now I'm looking at late next week or next weekend (at the earliest) to find out once an interim Duramaxx arrives...
I have had several shooters call me and even e-mail me with feedback on their Criterion Barrels. I have been asking these same shooters to share their results here on the board but most of them appear to be a little camera shy. I have requested these shooters to post a brief overview. Hopefully we will have something very soon.

I finally got mine screwed on and shot it on Saturday. I ordered a 260 rem. I am still waiting on a stock from another vendor so I kept it in the tupperware and loaded up some mild loads of h4831sc with 140gr smk in winchester 7-08 brass. The results are very promising....naturally the fliers are my fault. ;) Will post pics of completed build next week....like monday or tuesday.

Seeing those pictures, especially given I have a 260 CBI tube myself, I'd do almost anything for a heavy-barrel LA stock right about now... >:(
Jim, if you could ship that BVSS stock to me early this week it'd be greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ;D ;D ;D
Got mine screwed on the other day and just put some loads through it yesterday. The best measured .8", and if not for one flier, would have been less than .5". The other 4 groups were over 1", but this was the first time I've sat down and shot it, so I expect that to change. The barrel appears very well made, and the stamping that goes around the barrel is a nice touch; it is visible no matter where your barrel ends up. I'm very happy with it.
Got a Criterion in a Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor from Jim. I am impressed with the quality of the barrel and it's performance with Hornady factory 140g A-Max ammunition. After 40 rounds of factory not one group has been over .5 MOA. Two 8 shot groups averaged .48 and .40". Three shot groups (Bergers are pricey) with 41.5g of RL-17 and 140 VLD's were in the 3's.
The bore and exterior are flawless and after break-in and some cautious cleaning with Remington bore cleaner with a dusting of super-fine polishing compound the barrel looks like a mirror inside. Be sure and read Kreiger's barrel break-in procedures. One way to tell the quality of a crown is to carefully examine the pattern left on the muzzle after firing. The Criterion is perfect and exhibits a beautifully balanced star pattern. Of all the after market barrels I have purchased over many years the Criterion is number one on the list. My only negative would be the concave recess of the crown...it is a bit too shallow. But since I don't think I will be putting the muzzle down on a pickup floor (never did understand the wisdom of that move) this should not be a problem. ::)
OK guys, I just took 24 boxes to UPS for delivery to you deserving shooters. A few stocks but at least 21 boxes were Criterion and Shilen Barrels. No excuses now for some of you to not post your results as soon as you get your rigs assembled. I have another 57 Criterion Barrels on back order so if Brenda has not called you yet advising you that your order has shipped you are not too far from receiving your call. The 7mm Barrels are the next batch to ship as soon as they arrive. The 20 Cal. Barrels are now in production and should be here in 3 or 4 weeks.
I do have about a half dozen of the 26" Varmint Barrels in 6 BR Norma in stock for those of you that are looking. I even got in another batch of the 30" Bull Barrels in several calibers. I have been receiving some very nice calls from the shooters that are finally getting their Critetion Barrels shooting.

Oh Man, I can't wait, hopefully my 6.5X47 Lapua is in that bunch!
