Re: Barrel threads showing
Measure the thread length on both barrels.
Re: Barrel threads showing
I ruined a Wheeler tool getting that barrel off. I have a SSS tool now. The collar does not want to move and I do not want to crack my wood in the vise getting the old barrel apart. It appears to be the same length threads. I never did shoot the new 270 barrel but I am sure it is fine. ???
Re: Barrel threads showing
If the threads are the same length on each barrel, SOMETHING is not right, as Sharpshooter alludes to.
What are you using for a case gauge?
Have the right bolthead on the bolt?
Re: Barrel threads showing
you also swapped back to a factory recoil lug, so that will allow the barrel nut to screw down the barrel a little further toward the chamber end. Coulda been the difference.
Without actually measuring the threads or sitting them beside each other it'll be hard to see a 2 thread difference , especially if you still have the barrel nut on the old action.
As long as you are positive that it is headspaced and tightened correctly I wouldnt worry about it.
Re: Barrel threads showing
Both barrels are the same length. The older recoil lug is thinner than the newer one. That may be the difference. I will go with it, just looks a little weird. It is a hunting rifle. When I get the new stock done, I will put a new, thicker recoil lug on it. Hopefully that will make a difference. Thanks guys for the input.
Re: Barrel threads showing
are your scope base screws causing you restrictions and you only think your bottomed out on the headspace guage?
Re: Barrel threads showing
If the threads are the same length, there is not enough difference in the thickness of recoil lugs to make a coupla threads show. The pitch on the threads are 20 tpi, meaning .050" for every revolution. If 2 threads are showing, it's .100" difference. I'd say the case you are using has a problem. Use a new unfired case.
Re: Barrel threads showing
Also you may want to use some tape on the bottom of the same case (new or at least resized in your FL sizing die) you fitted the barrel with and see if the bolt will close on it......if it does, it is NOT head spaced properly yet.
Re: Barrel threads showing
I am using a new, unfired case that I ran through my die to set the head space. It is the correct length. I will put the barrel back on and try the tape ( no go ) test. Good idea, I was just hung up on the threads showing and stopped everything.
Re: Barrel threads showing
Mine show a little to . And it is headspaced . Shoots alright , cases are tight in the chamber

I've got a Hart 300wsm barrel that looks just like that. ;D

Re: Barrel threads showing
I reinstalled the barrel. I used the tape for the no go test and I think that it went well. I will put everything back together and give it a test run. Thanks for the support. Looks like I'm not the only one with some threads showing.
