Keep factory or buy new stock

My nephew recently bought a Axis LA in 25-06. I told him that I would check here as there is much wisdom on these forums. He wanted to know if it is worth trying to fix all the issues: fore end movement, weak along the action, removable trigger assembly and wrist area as well as the hollow stock? He also would need to have the stock shortened. He knows that either the factory or the aftermarket one should at least be bedded and maybe pillared. He said he liked the Boyds featherweight thumbhole. What mods do you think he would have to do to the Boyds besides the bedding/pillars? Thank you for your help. CJP1

The Axis factory stock can be improved with Rocktite. It could be cut shorter, as well. I'd suggest doing both and adding a neoprene slip on butt pad called Bear Tooth.

Boyds makes good stocks, greatly improves the whole rifle. I doubt the 25-06 will require pillars and bedding. I'd suggest shooting it first, If there are accuracy problems a good pillar bedding will likely solve them.

I bought a Boyd's thumb hole stock for my Axis in .223 Remington. It was a major improvement. Even with the customization, it was $186. It wasn't worth the time and money to do the Rockite solution. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d896fded11.jpg

But, if this is for a young kid who will outgrow it soon, you might be better off money-wise to modify the factory stock "on the cheap" and wait til he grows up more to do the Boyds stock. (They do not offer anything less than 12 3/4 inch LOP).

If this stock is for who I think it is, that might be the better way to go for now. :)

get the Boyds stocknow, cut it down, save the part you remove and add it back on later. Won't be as pretty, but it might work, saving you money in the long run.

I filled the fore-end with resin and floated the barrel. I then used bb's and resin to fill the butt stock. It's heavy as a tank now so not great for toting through the woods but with the added weight and Witt muzzle brake it has minimal recoil and does great bench shooting which is the main use for it. Shooting 30-06 180gr....

I would only upgrade the trigger to a rifle basix the one I have breaks clean just under 2 1/2 pounds - everything else is stock shoots well almost 1400 down the pipe to date - barrel is free floated and thats important

Shoot it first and then see if you can live with the accuracy before throwing money at it. I bought mine because it was cheap, and I too installed a Rifle Basix trigger and it shoots well under MOA with factory 243 ammo.
Spending a ton of money on a heavier stock makes zero sense in my situation. This is a coyote rifle.

I've been down this road and I can tell you it's more trouble than it's worth. You've got a $300.00 rifle with the most basic setup possible. The Recoil lug system itself should be a clue of how cheaply they are made... With that being said, The stock and the trigger are the weakest links in that system. I pillared and glass bedded my Axis 22-250 in a Boyds Prairie Hunter(not all at the same time) as I was trying to make it a shooter for Sage Rat shooting.

The story is too LOONG to type it all out. Basically, it started as a $300.00 gun, but by the time I was thru upgrading everything that it needed... It was $1200.00 gun when finished (including the optics)... It's a shooter now, but if I would have known then, what I know now... I would have chosen a different platform to build from....

The trigger is easily improved with "snipping the coils on the trigger spring" (Voids warranty however). But then a new stock is the next best improvement... After shooting for about 6 months with the new stock (Boyds anyway) you may develop the slop that I did with the action screws and lateral movement of the action within. Pillars and glass bedding at that time will resolve that.

It's a long PITA process to get it shooting bug holes.... but you will learn a lot about working on Savage rifles from there on...

as i said keep it stock except for the trigger - it will shoot accurately - not a fan of the remingtons 700 - but if you decide to get something else - I would suggest Weatherby or Howa very well made - as for the story on my Axis - its a shooter - likely exceeded 1,500 rounds thus far with 50 loaded this afternoon - right now when i wonder in gun stores i look on the used rack for a HB savage axis in 223 - someone traded it in not knowing its real potential

I thought of buying one of those for my MKII BV 22LR also but they weigh 3lbs. That's a bit heavy for a carry around hunting stock.

I talked it over with my nephew yesterday and he would like to try and stabilize the stock first. Just to see what we can do. I also ordered a Mcarbo Axis trigger spring kit yesterday as they were on sale plus 20% Labor Day coupon.

You'll like the spring. It makes shooting the Axis much more pleasant.

The retail price on the Mcarbo website is $19.95 though. That's what I was talking about. Even 20% off that seems excessive. For that price, I got a box of set screws and a bag of springs.
