New CBI prefit in 6.5x284

Well i finally installed my new barrel on my 116 weather warrior and loaded a few rounds up to fire form and am very pleased with the results. I am shooting the new hornady eld-x bullets behind 4831sc. I found a couple good nodes right off the bat. All bullets were loaded 20 thousands out of the rifling with brand new lapua brass which i did absolutely nothing to. Grabbed them out of the box and loaded them. I don't have that bullet, but 46 grains is max in my version that shows 140 gr bullets.

That's concerns me - Should I be,????? I know variables and all that so...,.,.....

Not bad at all for first loads. Lower left a flyer?

Looks like 5 shot groups of which I think is the baseline.

What contour?

I would get a Gerard Tri Trimmer for trimming, chambers, deburs and is amazingly accurate for trim length. I pre trim even Lapua, helps the bullets seat better though its good stuff.

I don't know the loads but if they are not up in the max range, I would put closer by .015 (small .005 steps) and see how that does.,

I am more a 30 cal guy but I am very interested in the 6.5s. 4831 is my favorite powder.

The lower left group was the first 5 shots i fired out of the gun. The high hole was the first shot and it grouped the rest really well. I think the 51 grain group has the best potential. It was my last group and i was in a hurry and didn't make the best shots and they still pretty much shot one hole. The first shot of that group was the one to the right, then the next three settled dead center in one hole and i flinched and pulled the last shot high. I knew it was a bad shot when i pulled the trigger. I am going to trim them all and neck size them and seat the 50gr. And 51gr loads a little closer to the lands and see how she does. I am also gonna load some hotter ladder loads up from 51 to try.

Sorry I didn't answer your question. Sierra's load data says 52.5 of 4831sc is book max with 140 class bullets. I haven't seen any pressure signs as of yet so I'm gonna push it a little more. Gonna take a chrono with me next trip to the range. By everything i have read i should be in the 2900-3000fps range. Are you shooting a CM? The barrel is a 26" ss match heavy sporter contour.

As you are well over what Hornady allows and a slightly heavier bullet, I would not push it any more. Pretty shocked its not showing all sorts of pressure signs.

As this is 4831 SC that is Hogdens . the max is 46 gr. (45.9)

A heavier bullet would be less but while not a whole lot you are 4+ grains over.

My Sierra shows 48.2 H4831 for the 142 bullet. 2800 fps. Far different velocity and still over by 2 or 3 grains.


I go with mfg bullet max not a close equal, I will use the close equals for the lower loads.

I finally loaded up a few more loads to fire form with 50.0g of 4831sc and shot them over my chronograph. My avg velocity was just over 2,700fps. Maybe i got a slower bottle idk. I looked at my brass a little closer and my 51.5gr loads were starting to flatten the primers so definitely not going to load up any hotter loads and go back down. Hopefully my next trip to the range with my fire formed,trimmed/turned, and neck sized brass will yield the results i am looking for.

He's likely shooting a 6.5x284 Norma and shooting in therange for that caliber. I've been over 52 with mine and that was enough.

Yessir. I ended up finalizing my load with 50.5grains of 4831sc. They chrono at 2,880 and shoot in the 2's and 3's at 100yds. I have only shot out to 400 yards with it and shot a 2" 3-shot group. Plenty good enough for me. I'm by no means a good shooter.

Hmm...I always thought the 6.5x284 would fling those 140's faster than that. My Savage 6.5x55 with 46.6 h4831 is already pushing 140 amaxes just over 2800. Might be due to case design?

I get myself lost too often, to many interests and I don't get back when I should.

SC is supposed to be the same as normal H4831. I am cautious in that if up in high end I would approach it very incrementally. If a book does not show them both then I get conservative with the other.

I tend to go with the bullet mfgs (higher loads) as those are the ones that shoot the powder with their bullets not the generic grain bullets of the same shape.

Even a primer change can buck things up a couple of grains worth.



2s and 3s is darned good shooting in my book.

I have used both H4831 and H4831sc interchangeably without issue. Hodgdon lists them both in the same description block on their website. SC version just meters and fills the case volume better.

Some primers are hotter than others. If using a magnum primer where it's not listed then you should consider it as adding 1 extra grain of powder to your load.

RC20 is correct in saying if you're shooting in the .2's and .3's you are doing something right.
