Bused Barrel Nut
Had a buddy call me this afternoon about a broken barrel nut on his 112 22-250. He told me that he noticed that the barrel nut was broken while he was watching his brother shoot his rifle.
Told him to bring it buy and I would look at it and see what we could do to replace the broken nut. I pulled the nut and it was cracked all the way across. I put an new one on and reheaspaced the rifle. It works fine.
I have never seen a barrel nut break before. Has anyone else? This is an older model 112 with the flatback action.

I've heard of the thinner barrel nuts failing with hot RUM loads.
Never heard of a small shank breaking. Must have been a flaw in the metal or something.
Glad it didn't do any harm or damage.

I've seen a few split nuts and they were all of the older round bottom groove type. These were thinner in the groove, and I suspect most of the ones that split, were split when they were originally installed.

This is the first time I've heard of a barrel nut cracking.

I've ran across 3-4 in the last 20 yrs.

Wow,
I've never heard of that, but if Fred has only seen 3 or 4 in 20 years, I'm certainly not going to start worrying about it now.
