thinking of RELOADING THE 6.5-06. im looking for a How to video????

I get the principal of resizing the case. some say use 270, 30.06, or 25.06! which of those cases is less steps? and which is less stress on changing the case. I would like to see a how to video. I noticed the dies for the 6.5-06 are like $65 to $85. Do you need just two dies or is it a three die set? I'm thinking of swapping barrels on my 110. Its a long action 25.06. looking for a 1000 yard target gun. 6.5-06 seems a lot more expensive to reload being a wildcat!!! any ideas to help my decision? I'm on a budget so I will only have one rifle. what long action cartridges are more accurate then the 25.06?????

A big advantage of using 30-06 and 308 as a base round is the availability of high quality brass. As far as dies goes, I would go straight down from 30-06 to 6.5-06. While you can neck-down in steps, this would require a resizing die in say a 280 or 270. For me, I won't purchase a die I have no real use for. I would buy this die set:

On a side note, you can just use the 2 die set. Most folks will recommend to neck size a cartridge once it's been fired in your rifle.

I necked up 25-06 brass. Easy one pass of the die. I ran 140gr Berger VLD's at 2950. with a rather light load of H100V. It was quite the fun rifle and was very easy to load for as well.

Budgets and wildcats dont really go hand in hand. Im not against wildcats as I have a couple. Unless youre dead set on the 6.5-06 I think there are others 6.5s that would work. I know theyre SA cartridges but the 6.5CM and the 260 would be good choices too. LongRange is the 260 guy to talk to if you go that route.

Neck up 25-06 or neck down 270Win or 06 brass using the 6.5-06 FL die. The only thing to watch is the neck wall thickness when necking down, it tend to thicken at times.

BTW, it uses the same gauges as the 25-06. 270 and 30-06. On a budget? Rent the gauges( Go/No Go) from 4D, eight bucks a set for seven days in your hand. http://www.4-dproducts.com/displayit...3&tname=rental

If you already have good matching 06 brass, then id be using it.
Otherwise assuming your buying new id personally buy 270 which is a very simple one step process to neck down in the 6.5/06 die.
Id also just be buying standard full length dies like RCBS or Lee. You can buy a seperate neck sizing die also if you wish.
Dies don't wear out so don't rule out looking on ebay for deals on used ones.
Build the gun you want and learn to shoot well with it.
Your own experience will be the best teacher for where you will go from there.
As for the wildcat, all the components cost the same for any of the cartridges with the exception of brass.
That's not an issue in your case with the 6.5x06. For that matter the 25x06 was also a wildcat as were many others.
Whats changed about loading for them simply because they are now offered in a factory version?

Thanks for the info.... what I meant by the "wildcat" was in the brass! you cant buy 6.5-06 brass so its extra work building the case. also the dies cost twice as much as a standard round. I have 30.06, and 25.06 cases for the 6.5-06!

Extra work?
Yesterday I traded 100 sticks of virgin 222R brass for 100 virgin '06s. After 20 or so minutes after I got them home 40 were 25-06s. Lightly lubed the bodies-neck ODs with Imperial, shoved them in the 25-06 FL die then trimmed them to length. Zero difference than prep'm any other cartridge.

With a good full length sizing die you can use just about any -06 based brass and be just fine.

Keep in mind that are pushing a fixed amount of brass into a new shape. If you are necking down it goes up as well as thickening the necks. If you go down you are going to thin the neck, but in reality if you are going up you are using 25-06 brass and it's only .007 difference and it isn't going to be an issue.

Unless you have a very tight chambered neck the extra thickness shouldn't be an issue. If the extra thickness reduces clearance between case neck and chamber to below .003 you may need to neck turn. Pinching a bullet can result in over pressure situation quickly.

Your giving him more things to worry about now lol.
The barrel supplier should be able to furnish the neck dimension.
For sure a decent gunsmith would do that when he chambers it.

I have a couple of them, one standard one an Ackley.
I use Redding dies fwiw.
I neck up 25-06 brass and shoot it. Works great.
One of the others mentioned the 260 also. Again, mines an Ackley, the Ackley will run a 140 2900 plus no problem.
Either is a fine choice.
I'd probably lean toward the 6.5-06 since you already have 25-06 brass laying around.

Sorry Bill, the A-square didn't even enter my mind. My apologies :stupid:.
I think the cartridge is a good one, no doubt. Keep us posted on your build.
If you have a good supply of brass then go for it. Nearly anything from 06 cases are good ones. :thumb:
