Now what to do with this 338??

I bought a savage 116 stainless steel non accustock for a back up rifle to my other 338 win mag. I don't even consider it a back up because I just can't get it to shoot. I have the tools to rebarrel and have done so with a 260 remington with good success. Should I rebarrel or trade in for one with a accustock? I put a different stock on it to try and get it to shoot better and it was a laminated stock. It cracked all to pieces. Could be I torqued it down to hard, torqued it to 40 in/lbs. Also thinking about getting a smaller caliber that does not thump me so hard. Advice????

But if you are already versed in the ways of re-barreling, DO IT!!

Personally I don't know any animal on this continent that needs more than a 308. If you really want to hedge your bets, the 30-06 is rated for anything up to, and including some small whale species.

How much thump you want depends on range. A 308 win at a moose from a 1000 yards is a bad idea, not saying it can't be done but not recommended. I torque everything.
Try bedding it or changing bullets first.

A 22LR will kill anything on the planet also, but I'm not going to hunt a grizzly with one.

Any moose at a 1000 isnt a good idea. If it wont shoot at all, send it back to Savage, let them test it. Was the lam stock new? It should be replaced by the maker. If you love to re-barrel, maybe do one of its little brothers, 300 Win Mag or 7mm mag. Or go bigger to 416 Taylor.

Unless blatantly obvious humor about whales escaped you, equating the 30-06 on grizz to a 22LR across the world; makes me think you must need a lot more practice if you think it struggles to take them down.

With a high efficiency round carrying enough energy, a competent shooter in fair conditions: A moose's vitals are a very easy target.

Was the stock that broke pillar bedded ?

I can definitely hit a whale with a 22LR.

Well someone else will have to mess with the 338, trade it off for a 7mm today. cheaper than doing a re-barrel and also have a accustock on this one.
