Re: Scope mounted to low?
Should have mentioned its a .308
Re: Scope mounted to low?
If it were me I would change the rings before I squeezed the trigger. Go to optics planet or swfa and get a set of Burris XTR med rings they will give you enough height.Or a set of highs from other makers.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Thanks Froggy....Thats what I was afraid of. At least it will give me something to do in the morning.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Nice grass!!!!!!!
Let us know how you like the gun.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
The only things negative I can come up with so far (having not fired it yet) are the weight and the cheek rest. My scale shows 17.3 lbs and my wife's shows 15.9lbs. I believe my scale.(we argue about that all the time) The cheek rest is a little weak. It flexes with the slightest weight put to it but I think I can shim it for now until I find a AR type stock I like better. I picked up some taller Leupold rings this morning and as soon as the weather clears I'm going to dial this thing in.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Maybe I haven't been paying attention here but, I just cannot visualize a barrel flexing 1/16 (.063)" in relation to the scope just 4 or 5 inches forward of the action.

Re: Scope mounted to low?
I wasn't thinking the barrel would flex as much as I was thinking the scope might (recoil). I put the taller rings on and will sight it in tomorrow. If the taller rings eat up to much of the adjustment in my scope I will switch back and hope your right.

Re: Scope mounted to low?
It looks to me as if your problem would be solved if you could just remove that picatinney rail between the scope and the barrel. Of what use is it?

Re: Scope mounted to low?
Uncle Jack,
I thought the samething when I saw it but that is what came with the gun. After spending $1650 for the gun and $360 for the scope and $65 for the rings and another $200 on ammo there is no way in h*ll that I'm going to tell my wife that I need to spend more on a base right now. Not even if everyone on this forum showed up locked and loaded and had my back. It will have to sit with that base for a while I think.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Although my wife passed away 5 years ago, I do remember and I understand.
I feel your pain.

Re: Scope mounted to low?
I am truly sorry to hear about your wife and I thank you for your input Uncle Jack.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Absolutely no need to feel sorry. I was just pointing out that I've been pretty much on my own for so long that I sometimes forget that others often have more than themselves to consider when making decisions.
I was very fortunate. In 42 years Patty never asked about my guns or fishing equipment and I, in turn, never inquired about the contents of her closet or her sewing room. That was the best agreement we ever made.

Re: Scope mounted to low?
If your scope flexed and hit the barrel when firing and did any damage to the scope the scope isn't very good for a tactical rifle. I do not think it will flex enough to touch with the low rings. What you could try is to have someone put a long piece of paper under the scope and pull it slowly when you fire. If it grabs when firing you will know it is to close. You could also make sure the front ring is as far forward as possible to support the front of the scope.

Re: Scope mounted to low?
or put two pieces of paper with a piece of carbon paper in the middle between the scope and the barrel and see if there is any impression after firing. I seriously doubt that any properly mounted scope and rifle would flex 1/16".

Plus one!
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Your scope won't ever make contact. It's a .308 rifle, not a howitzer! ;D
Seriously, mathematically speaking, the front of the barrel would have to twist up about two inches... You'd snap the barrel threads long before the barrel made contact with the base...
Re: Scope mounted to low?
I don't think it's worth worrying about. I mount mine pretty tight, and haven't had a problem.
Re: Scope mounted to low?
Thanks guys,
I shot 30 rounds with the low rings and no problems. I sometimes overthink things.

Re: Scope mounted to low?
The front rail is still pretty useless... Unless you got a front-mounted NVG system you haven't told us about. ;D
Re: Scope mounted to low?
No, no $10k NV system. I also have no use for my nipples other than rubbing them when I get drunk but I think I will keep them too.
