DIY Dry Fire "Snap Cap" for the MK ll

We all know that dry-fire practice is a great way to maintain your trigger skills. We also know that dry firing most rimfire guns can cause damage to the firing pin and/or breech face. What follows is an easy way to prevent damage while dry firing.

The only part you will need is a nylon flat washer from the local big box/hardware store. The one I used measures 1-1/8" OD, 1/2" ID (to fit over the bolt hammer) and 1/8" thick;

The photo above shows the washer and the modification to it. I used a Dremel cut-off tool and a file to configure it.

The washer should be cut so it snaps over the bolt hammer and stays in place as shown above.

The bottom should be trimmed so that the snap cap doesn't touch the stock when pushed all the way forward.

To make sure the snap cap is working as intended, I placed a fired case in the chamber and dry fired several times. Removing the case showed no other firing pin strikes on the rim.

The nylon washer appears to be quite durable for this purpose and should last a long time. That said, keep an eye open for wear on the washer to make certain it is doing the job.

I have a bunch of split o-rings in the range box. They function the same way as the washer, but are more subtle, acting as a secondary safety, too, when my rifles and bolts are put away. Should someone insert the bolt with nefarious intent, chances are they won't even notice the o-ring at all. My simple mind thinks the rubber provides a gentle stop for the firing pin, but that may be a completely self-perceived benefit.
