Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
I wondered into the Savage booth at the RMEF Elk Camp today in Reno hoping to fondle the new 338 Lapua. Instead, I found myself handling a new action called- Edge.
Here's the features as I remember them:
Non-accutrigger. Appeared to be a cast action. RH only. Flat black coating, felt like black oxide. Swept bolt handle. No rear baffle. Centerfeed. Old style barrel nut. Different style tang. Old style tang safety. Standard calibers only, no magnums. Oval loading/ejection port similar to target action. Used normal bolt head/baffle configuration. MSRP $329.
Sorry, I should have snapped a picture.

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
When you can get a stevens for a little over 200 on sale whats the point?
-
Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
I'm thinking that with a MSRP of $329, we will probably see this one for as low as $279 day to day with sale prices as low as $249 maybe?

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
I've known about this since before the Shot Show, but I was told it would not be out till March. I spoke to Al Kasper about this at the SHOT, he stated that it also used a self contained trigger group. But,I havn't got to lay my eyes on one yet. He also stated that it cost $50.00 less to manufacture.

Sharpshooter, do you have any more info on this gun that can share? Or are you still sworn to secrecy? ;)

And perhaps the elimination of the Stevens as the entry level rifle?

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
That was my first thought.
Hope it's not the case.

I don't know about the trigger. I forgot to mention that it still had the regular cocking pin and the old style sear lever on the side of the action. It looked and felt like the old style trigger/sear/safety.

Good point Ed... What would they do with the stevens with only $50 difference in price? Add an accutrigger and bump the price up some to make it a middle grade. Savage?

It's best not to speculate about pricing until you actually see one on a dealers shelf. Engineers and marketing people are different breeds and "dance" to entirely different drummers.

Ain't that the truth Uncle Jack!

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
I was only sworn to secrecy till the Shot Show, and I figured I would see it there. But it wasn't there. I cornered Al Kasper and asked him where the new secret weapon was and he assumed I was talking about the .338 Lapua. When I said "no....the one nobody knows about yet". He gave me a puzzled look and grin and said nobody will see one till march. He explained about some new tooling technology that lowered manufacturing costs on several of the key components.

The guy I talked to said that they just put it together last week.

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
It's March and I saw one. He lived up to his part of the bargain. ;D
What else did you want to know?

AcuSport has some low resolution photos you can see after you correct their URL (wrong way slash).

They don't help much.

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
Are there any advantages/disadvantages of using the old style as opposed to the new style safety/sear/trigger system?
Are there aftermarket triggers still available for this type of system?
Thanks!

When they put the bolt handle on the other side, I will start to get excited.

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
yup, bolt's on the wrong side of the rifle.

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
Boy I don't know if I'm excited about it or not it looks kinda cheap. I'm for sure not into the whole rifle.

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
I heard that the distributor price is under $239 about $30 less than a Stevens. Apparently, they're already in most distributor online systems.
I wonder if the action would be considered less strong (and less safe?) for builds? I have a couple of barrels that could use a home...

Re: Saw a new Savage action today- Savage Edge
I'm going to a gun show tomorrow, and I will definately be looking to see if I spot one of these. If so i'll give it a good once-over.
Just looks like a streamlined 110 action, with a port kinda resembling the target action port. Do not like the looks of the stock.
Wonder if they were smart enough to keep the centerfeed action screw spacing, or will this one be AGAIN different all together...LOL
