First savage build is complete
I have owned several Savage rifles but never did my own barrel swaps or bolt work. I finished my SS project last night and supported a few sponsors here in the process. Started out as a model 16 fss in .308. Installed a 26" 7mm-08 Criterion barrel from Northland ( thanks Jim), SSS fluted bolt and recoil lug (thanks Lisa) into a B&C medalist stock ( from Stocky's). Time to hit the bench and punch some holes. I wish Savage would catalog std actions only again.

Nice!
I just did almost the same thing. I turned my .308 Model 16 into a 7mm-08, only mine has a 20" barrel and I plan on it being my primary hunting rifle and the shorter barrel is just easier to handle in a stand or blind.
As a side note, it seems like the 7mm-08 is gaining in popularity these days.

Unwritten law you must post PICTURES and more PICTURES
Re: First savage build is complete
Jake I thought bout that but Jim had a 26" in stock and my box blind is 5' x 7' so length is not really a major issue.
Re: First savage build is complete
Yeah, I don't have a steady place to hunt yet, so I find myself in some rather unforgiving binds and stands.
My next build will have a 26" heavy barrel, but it will probably be a .338-06 or some such cannon.

Wow i did almost the same thing as well. 7mm-08 26" from Jim, B&C stock, and here is a pic

I went out yesterday for break in, shot a .3" group @ 100 with just 20 rounds down the barrel, and factory ammo.
I am going to start to work up some loads this week, post what kind of results and loads are working for you

Loading 42.5 gr of H4895 under a Hornady 139 SST with a Rem 9 1/2. Soon as the boss gets here will get a pic up.

I'd really hate to see somebody open that door behind the gun and knock it on the floor!
