Would like to have a shorter barrel on my 12fv to make it more handy. How short could I go, 20"? Most of my shooting is 200 yards with this rifle.

I have shot prairie dogs out to a little over 500 yards with my 15" Striker in 22-250. Clay pigeons at 300 is not a problem. You will be more than fine with a 20" tube at 200.
Would you have the same opinion with a. 243 and a 20" barrel? Looking at buying a Savage. 243 and just don't care for the longer length.
I have a .243 with a 17" heavy Mcgowen barrel that truly groups well under .5" at 100 yards. My one group I shot at 300 was 2.2" Not bad for a handgun. Just bought a 19" 6-284 Mcgowen barrel for Wyomingantelope hunt next fall.
Shoot what you like.
I realize that all areas are different but what should I expect to pay to have the barrel cut down, re-crowned and re-blued?
$40 plus shipping for cut and crown, add $5 if you want the muzzle reblued, from me that is
Sinman, would I need to remove the barrel from the receiver to have this work done?
yes to ship it to me, I think all barrels should be removed from the receiver when getting work done on them otherwise the rotating mass is off center and maybe not give optimum results.
Got it back today from a local gunsmith. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Now if the weather would cooperate I can get out and see how it shoots.
