Older model 10 Scout in 308 - most cost effective replacement barrel?

Hi - long time lurker, finally made an ID so I could post a question.

I spent hours and hours looking but can't find an answer.

I have an older model 10 Scout rifle in 308 - it is my deer hunting rifle. The barrel is too thin to add threads for a suppressor. I would prefer to not dump a ton of money into a new barrel just so I can attach a suppressor to it. Any recommendations on cost effective barrels? Of course I like accuracy but it really doesn't need to be sub MOA for my purposes. I'm flexible, but in an ideal world, it would be blued matte, 16.5" length and the lighter the better.

the most cost effective is a factory take off. not as common as the were 5 years ago though.

Your two best bets.

Have you measured your barrel? Need it to be .670” or larger to turn & thread 5/8-24.

New barrel, probably X-barrel. Looking around $450 for a 416R Stainless 16-17” Savage Sporter a/ .590 muzzle, threaded 5/8-24.

I have used the muzzle face to shoulder up to on thinner barrels as apposed to a shoulder at the major diameter when threading for a brake. in that case the OD is turned to the threads major Diameter. In the case of a 5/8-24, 6.200" concentric to the bore would be ideal. If that is a bad idea it has never been explained to me.

Sounds good to me Rob. :( I’m only avid with turning threads as I don't have room for a proper lathe. My use is limited as result.

If you have a .308 scout with a 20" barrel and you're okay with a 16.5" barrel, then measure your barrel at 16.5" and see if it meets spec. for being threaded. Chances are it will.

Aside from that, FeeBay is the place to find affordable take-offs and many of them are already threaded these days.

If you have one built, it's going to run you at least $300-350 or more for a threaded barrel.

Try Midway usa I look through the sale items &clearance. Likely they will have something.
