Stevens 22-250 inaccurate

I know the stock on the Stevens is the worst, but with different scopes I can't get it to shoot either. The very best it did was 1/2 with the first 2 and then jump left 1.5" for the next 3. I've been reading other posts and will strip the mount and scope and change that. My brother uses my ammo and shoots .5 3 shoot groups all the time. This the first Sav-stevens that i can't get to shoot. Thinking about a Boyds stock and after-market barrel or give or throw it away and start over. I have a 6.5x284 that shoots sub MOA @ 600 & 900 yards. Any ideas?? Thanks for your help. Idahojoe

First thing I would check is make sure your front base screws aren't bottoming out.
If they are you will never get the bases tight.

Assuming your verticle is within reason you may think about bedding. Have seen it before and it doesn't take much wiggle to move shots like that.

Thanks for the input, I'll check the base screws and bed the action. I think I can get the bedding to stick if I rough it up some. Was also thinking about bedding a couple of carbon arrow shafts in the forearm to try to get it from flopping around. Do you think that the thin barrel needs forearm pressure or just float it?? You don't want any barrel touching a stock. Make sure it floats.

How clean do you keep your barrel and how many shots down the tube?

I had a 223 sporter barrel that took around 200 shot to break in and for that first 200 it would do what you are describing. Finally one day it started putting 5 in a nice group. Shortly after I cleaned it thinking I was helping it and groups opened again. Once it got dirty again it closed the groups up. So I just let it stay dirty and it all worked out, until I had to clean it again. Ended up selling it to a buddy and since he is not real excited to clean guns he was over-joyed when I told him not to clean it much. Been a 1/2MOA shooter for me and him.

I've got 130-150 down the tube now. Once they're broke in I don't clean until the groups open up. Thats 50-75 rnds depending on load & speed. I need to get it to group less than an 1" to start with. 3 rnd clover leaf would be nice. Joe

I have a Savage with a used take-off Stevens 22-250 barrel of unknown round count. This thing will shoot 65 gr Sierras into less that 1/2" all day long if I pay attention. I clean the barrel after a day in the field and that is usually 150 to 200 rounds. If all factory barrels shot like this one the custom barrel makers would be out of business. BTW, I paid $25.00 or $30.00 for the barrel from a member here. Best deal on a barrel I ever had.

If the vertical isn't too bad, you should check and make sure that the front sling swivel isn't sitting on the rest.

If the weather allows, I'll see if bedding will bring it together. Checked the mount and everything looked and measured out. Free floated the barrel & will post the results. Thanks for the input. I J

You could send it to Savagegunsmithing for an accurizing job, the smith, Scott really gets them to shoot, but even with his reasonable prices, it may be more than you might want to spend on a Stevens.

Bedded the action & made sure the bbl was floating. 1/2" 3 shot groups @ 100yds, now tune the loads and I'll carry it in the truck for yodel dogs. Flimsy stock but it's working. IJ
