Yes. Many have done it with no trouble at all.
Savage actually used to build some RUM's. Dont know why the nixed production of it. Maybe lack of demand i dont know.
Are the current actions long enough? Would it function as a repeater?
The Savage actions can be used as a repeater, but modifications need to be made.
On stagger feed actions the magazine opening needs to be opened up like a center feed action.
Center feed actions themselves don't need to be opened up.
The next thing to be modified is the magazine itself. I did my repeater with a stagger feed magazine. I cut the tabs off. Slotted the forward end so the bullets will stick out. Notched the rear for bolt clearance. Then I glued the whole thing into the magwell of the stock. I'd think you could do similar to a center feed magazine.
In my opinion, it's not worth the trouble to do the modifications to make the Savage a repeater. They make great single shots. I hate to say it but the Remington 700 is better suited for a big RUM repeater.
I'm kinda on a Savage kick as of lately. I'm not real impressed with the quality of products that Remington is producing right now. I saw that Midway USA carries a RUM Bolt for the long actions. Will I need one of those? Did you use a 110,111, 116? I'll probably go with one of the centerfeed actions that they are making now. I am looking to make an ultimate Kodiak Island Rifle. I think a 375 RUM with a muzzle braked 24 inch barrel and a duramax stock will do nice. A 300 grain Accubond going 2900 fps should lay a pretty good hurtin on damn near anything that walks the earth.
The other thing to consider is the massive amounts of recoil. I have heard of mercury recoil reducers but have no used them myself.
The 375 rum will have more of a pushing recoil than the 338 edge/rum which should be tamed pretty well with a good break. I have made tons on rum barrels for savages and 90% are on std shanks and 8% are for target actions (short actions) and the last 2% are for factory rum actions. You will be fine with a std shank.
No, you don't need the RUM bolt head. Those are for the actions milled for the standing ejector and the CRF bolt heads. A regular push feed magnum bolt head is all you need.Quote:

my 338 rum started life as a large shank non accutrigger factory 7mm rum. i installed a 28'' 1-10 mcgowen 338 rum barrel, holland radial muzzle break, egw 20 moa base, and a junk pile LA wood stock. had to open up the mag box area of the stock, since it was cut for the standard 3.4" LA mag, not the 3.6" rum mag. did a quick bedding job and started load dev while my Stockade stock was being made. the rifle exceeded my expectations, shooting mosty loads under .5 moa w minimal load development. the unmodified factory magazine functions fine, but im limited to a OAL of 3.590 - which may be a bit short for some folks. it does require seating the bullets kinda deep, cutting into the case capacity which was an issue when i was working with the slower bulky powders. on the advise of some longtime rum/lapua shooters i switched to 4831ssc and found i could get the same velocity w good load density and accuracy at this OAL. if i wanted to use a longer OAL i could still modify the action, magbox and stock, but i dont see the need atm
only tellin u all this cause the easy way to build ur rifle is to find a factory savage rum donor. ull need to be patient till one comes along. i called every gun shop within 50 miles of my home, and after 2 hrs on the phone i found mine at a small shop about an hours drive away. they wanted $400 for it, i letem keep the scope rings and bases and they knocked $50 off hehe...sould the barrel and factory tupperware, ended up w $225 in the donor action. gun without optics was under 1k. w a rum donor all u would need is a barrel to get started, although ull probably want a nicer stock.

This maybe the ultimate Kodiak gun. Just read about it in Guns and Ammo and they all look good. The biggest is 375 RUM necked up to 50cal. I really like the 50 Super Short.

Whats the matter with the Ruger 375? Dont need special actions or magazines as it is a 30-06 length cartridge.

I have a new 375 116 FSS that if I dont sell going to run a 375 Weatherby reamer in the chamber. This round is an easy one to fireform as you just shoot 375HH in and it ejects a fire formed case. If youre in Bum F--- someplace and can only find 375 ammo just shoot it and loose about 50fps in new chamber. Look at loading of this one compared to 375 RUM uses about 10 gr less powder to get same velocity with 300 gr ball. Pretty efficient but need 375 lenght action.
The stock Savage 114 Ultra 7MM STW I had was built on what Savage called a RUM action. The only difference I could see between the RUM and the standard 116 action is that Savage had milled the feed ramp to a much sharper angle on the RUM action so that the longer 8MM brass would feed correctly. Magazine length and everything else measured the same as the 116 in 7MM Magnum.
Cavtrooper, you should look on a "broker of guns" type web site and search "savage ultra mag" you might find what your looking for. hurry it wont last long.
can anyone tell if the rum action is small or large shank? i'm thinking they made them both ways.
Length of the barrel nut and there will be a step in the barrel in front of the barrel nut.
