Hello from Saginaw, MI
Mike here. I just purchased a 16/116 Trophy Hunter XP .308 for deer hunting here in Michigan. I bought this rifle so I could retire my Ted Williams 30-30 I've owned for about 40 years.
The factory mounted Nikon scope wasn't square so I adjusted that first. I'm having trouble with too much eye relief. I can't get a crisp sight picture without straining. So I figured I reach out to group of Savage owners for advice on a base that will allow me to move the scope further back.
I'm sure I'll pick up many other valuable tips an tricks along the way.
Peace.

Welcome.
It often makes it easier to get help if you post any questions in the appropriate forum category with a title in order to get the best responses.
I am really a fan of the 16/116s and have a couple myself.
Not really familiar with the "package gun" scopes, other than they are most often the minimum quality to be serviceable, and aimed at entry level shooters/hunters on a budget.
Have you tried turning/adjusting/ focusing the rear eye piece?
