Hi guys, I just started reloading. I'm worried I crimped too much on both loads of 308 win. Both are starting loads for ram tac and varget topped will hornady sst 165gr. I wish I could upload a pic of them on here. Using the lee dies, it looks like a roll crimp into the cannular. I'm worried about too much pressure or bullet deformation. Help? Also, can I upload a pic on this thread?

No real need to crimp for a bolt action but if you do want to crimp using the Lee factory crimp die just start with no crimp and add a little at a time until you get as much as you want
Crimping for bolt actions? Not necessary. Set your dies so it seats the bullet deep enough without crimping and don't worry about it.

Well, try puling them with an inertia bullet puller and see if the bullet is deformed.
I seriously dought you,ll have any problems. Your powder charge is at starting weights. Shoot them. Your probably seeing slight deformation of the case where you've crimped the brass into the cannalure.
Ive disassembled factory federal gold metal match in 168gr SMK,s as to have a look under the hood and was surprised as to the amount of crimp they put on. They crimped there rounds so much it actually left indentations on the bullets.
Only reason I pulled them was because they patterned so good.
I think that is what I did, just crimp it into the groove. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that you have a slight indentation on the bullet that pattern so well

Obviously you've never loaded compressed loads and let them sit on the shelf for a few months. I've had to re-seat bullets on more than one occasion due to "growth spurts" that pushed them well into the lands.Quote:

I crimp all my AR stuff except for competition where we single load. Note that your load could change from crimp to non crimp.

You velocities will almost certainly change crimped, non crimped. I do crimp my hunting rounds for my bolt gun. Might just be peace of mind for me, but I may not shoot them all in one season and they do a lot of getting banged around in the box in my packs and travelling on the road.Quote:
