Just picked up a Savage factory 308 barrel, stainless, fluted. Is that 1;10 twist?
What bullets, powder and loads have some of you had success with?
This is my first 308 project.
thanks

42grs IMR 4064/168 SMK pretty standard. Has shot well in all my 308s. The load I start with and a lot of the time stay with.
Best regards,
Grit
I have two go to loads for the 308 winchester:
Accurate 4064 41g Speer/Sierra 168 match
For hunting:
IMR 4895 45g Hornady 155g a-max
My .308 Win barrel is 1 in 10 twist.
I've had good results using Varget powder and 175 gr. Sierra Match Kings. If you want a little faster bullet, the 168 gr SMKs do well too.
165 grain Hornday SST over 44grs Varget gets the job done.
Mine likes 150gr Sierra gamekings with about 46.5 of Varget, a little over 2900 fps and very accurate, I havent tried any of the heavier bullets yet.
I recently picked up some CFE223 powder and hope tp try it out next weekend.
Mike
Mine like 46 varget and Hornaday 150 gr 3031 bullets
175gn SMK over 42.3gn of IMR 4064, 210M primers in LC brass.
What and how far do you want to shoot? The .308 can do it about all but not with the same load.
For hunting with my FP, I shoot 165gr Speer Hot-Cor's. They have killed every animal from a 6X6 elk to rockchucks without an issue.
For my bench work, I am also a 175SMK guy. However I am exclusively a Win 748 man. I can launch the 175's past 2600fps with less pressure, than when I use Varget; I also get more rounds down-range, with less heat when using 748.
My accuracy load is 43.5 gr 748, with that load I can interchange LC, or commercial mixed headstamp brass without pressures.
I have had the best luck in my 308 with H4895.
43.5 gr Reloder 15 and 168 gr. Hornady A-Maxes work well in my 10FP out to 600 yds. 2700 fps. MV.
still in the process of load testing, but I'm narrowed down to 178gr Hornady A-Max and testing 43.5-44.6gr of Varget, have gotten half MOA groups at times with 43.5, 43.8 and 44.3 gr, average for all 3 is under 1 MOA so now I'm fine tuning to find consistency.
Glad for your success! ;)
Hornady 178 BTHP Match with 43.8gr Varget in Federal Brass and 210m primers. I load .030 off the lands in my old 110 Tactical. I also had good luck with 44.5grs of Varget and the 168 SMK.
I went with the 178 for the higher BC.
Anyone load the 168 Berger Hybrids?
