I have a standard model 10 in .243 and would like to make it a heavy barrel of the same caliber. Would you guys swap the barrel and stock or just buy a new varmint gun?

Money is no object.. both! Buy a heavy .243 and rechamber the old one to something else like .243 AI :)
the real question in my mind is, do you want better then a normal savage barrel? 1 high end custom or 2 guns the money could be close to the same.
there is a new McGowan, 243AI, 1-9" twist, 26" Varmint, SS, Small Shank in the paid member classifieds
,m just finishing up a Heavy Barrel conversion but I,m going from the standard length 22 inch 243 to a 26 inch 223
Any excuse to buy a new gun works for me. Buy a new rifle and then fine another excuse to do a barrel swap. And it's always better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
Brand new not a round through it. Would be just the ticket. ;DQuote:

Building gives you the advantage of getting it done all your way and lets you choose calibers not available from the factory. However if a factory gun gives you everything you need or want, then by all means get it. Just as long as it is a Savage ;).
I will say that I have built several of my Savage for under $800.
