Just agreed to purchase a Savage 99 DL in 308
I'll be getting it at the end of the month, and am really looking forward to getting my hands on it. The guy who owns it is a retired gunsmith so I'm sure it's in excellent condition. It's made in 1960 and has the rotary mag.
Any hints or tips about looking after, or getting the best from this firearm would be welcomed!

Don't take apart the rotary mag if it is working! Just a big can of worms you don't need to open.
Stick to factory-equivalent handloads too - shooting max loads out of 99's will result in short brass life and stuck shells.
Other than that - shoot and enjoy it.

Thanks for the tips. And I will enjoy it: it's in excellent condition and looks like a very handsome rifle.

BTW it's factory drilled and tapped for a scope. Any advice regarding rings and scopes would be welcome. I'm thinking 2-7 x 40 Leupold VX-I.

The vortex line of scopes is a great line of scopes from everything I've read and heard. I don't know what kinda bases will work on the 99s, so I can't help you there.

I use Redfield Jr bases and rings on all my scoped 99's.
I go with either Redfield 2-7 or 3-9 Lo Pro usually to.
Basically the same thing as the Leupold mounts.
A Leupold 2-7 is a great choice as well.
