270AI worth it?

I was recently given a set of 270AI dies by my Son...... I've shot my 270win now for over 20 years, the last time I shot a group, just before the deer hunt last year, the rifle still shot a .47" group from the dead sled with a Sierra 130 BTS over a nearly max load of H4831SC, about 3100 fps. I didn't take the chrono. I was wondering if there is much to be gained by by reaming the chamber to match the dies? Unless there is at least 2-300fps I can't see doing it.... I haven't seen much data anywhere on the 270AI........... Any Help?

How long is the barrel? With anything less that a 26" barrel, I don't think you will see much gain. Just use the sizer die as a neck sizer.

If you have a good hunting rifle that you've been shooting for 20 years and it still shoot 1/2" MOA, I would not do a thing to it.

The rifle, a Remington 700LH BDL has a 22" barrel. I was leaning towards leaving the rifle alone, It's taken my dozens of Mule Deer and Several Elk. I might look for a left-handed Savage long action to re-barrel, however, there are so many wonderful cartridges today I doubt if I'd pick the 270AI as my first choice for another winter project... I've finished my last project was a re-barrel of my 12FLV to a 6.5x47Lapua.... I built it for a long-range varmint rig. I'm still working up loads, but love the rifle.....

I have a very similar rifle. It's a 30+ year old Rem 700LH based Brown Precision with a 22" SS .270Win Shilen barrel. I've never worked on a perfect load for this rifle, just shot a case full of H4831 behind a Speer 130 GS or Nosler partition and it regularly prints 1/2" to 3/4". It has served me very well. I hope to be buried with it.

I don't have a 270 AI but I do have an improved 6-06 which is of course the same case. It is a slight benefit in performance but not enough to convert a servicable rifle. Setting up a new rifle would be another story, choose a long barrel and have at it.

kslefty --- The problem is, why pick a nearly obsolete 270AI over some of the newer Hot rounds, like the 270WSM? I also have a Winchester model70 pre-64 that was my fathers. I thought the rifle was original, and since I don't shoot a 30:06 I listed it on GunBroker, I found out that the rifle had been altered, I didn't know dad had done it, the barrel had been shortened 2" to 22", of instead of $1500+ it's worth about $600, for the action...... Dad has done this at least 4 times to weapons that are now considered collectible.... I got very upset at one of the others, but that's another story......

I could use that action, or buy a Savage action and try one of the .277 wildcats, I think they have been over looked as an accurate bullet --- comments? Still waiting for data on the 270AI, just ball park is ok..... Thanks

Your not going to gain anything velocity wise, but it will do the same with less powder (less recoil), roughly 10-15 grains less and it will work through a short action, if thats important. My goal was to build a light accurate carry rifle with the "oomph" of a 270. Beside, it looks cool and people ask "Yer shoot'n a what"? ;D

Actually, 45-46 grains is about the practical maximum depending on the rifle/barrel.

I think he is talking about the standard .270 in the AI configuration, not our little .270/08 AI.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet...your days of trimming 270 AI brass will only need to occur after every 3-5 times of firing the brass. One of the overlooked features of just about every AI cartridge.

I've got a 22-250AI that I love. But I've been told there isn't much if any increase in velocity with the 270AI and that would be the main reason I'd like to change it over......

I have a 270 win and a 270 wsm the wsm is only about 100 fps faster than the 270 win not worth messing up a rifle that shoots that good now. leave it alone and build on another like a stevens 200 or a Marlin XS or XL7 for less than $300.00. plus the barrels interchange.

load from a disc was giving a lot of conflicting numbers,b ut 100fps was about the avg gain for 130gr bullets.

I've decided to leave the Remington LH alone, it's been a great rifle, over the years. It's taken every Muley and Elk I've taken, more than 40 animals..... If for no other reason than sentimentality, I'll keep it as is.....

I'll put the 270AI dies up for sale and look else where for a project....

Sometimes I get caught up in the velocity trap, looking for a few feet per second increase.....
