Spent primer separation in brass?

Starline .38 Special brass used in Cowboy Action Shooting. I don't always get all of my brass back after a stage and sometimes I end up with someone elses brass.

Regardless, the loads are almost always minimum power/pressure.

While depriming/resizing, nothing felt amiss. Then the new primer wouldn't seat. Using a Dillon 550.

Ran the brass back into the die to pop the partially seated primer out and found this.

I was not able to pry out whatever is left.

Any ideas?

Can't say I've ever had that happen, I'm interested in seeing what anyone says. I know you cant tell for sure but if they're yours did they seat funny or anything? Wonder if there's a rough spot or ring in the primer pocket?

definitly a pretty good trick, no?
Primer pocket to primer size issue, or perhaps just a wicked load.

As for getting it out, I would try an easy-out, or drill bit.

I'm wondering if it wasn't a double charge??

Until I tried to put a new primer in this pocket, I've not had one that was difficult to seat.

Assuming that it was one of mine - I can assure you it was not a wicked load. We kindly refer to our competition loads as "mouse fart" loads. 105 gr 38 Special at ~750 fps.

Not if it was one of mine. Not to say that it's never happened before, it did, once. At the time I was using Clays - a starting load doesn't take up much volume. I didn't notice the difference until I pulled the trigger. Fortunately, I was shooting a Ruger. I now load Trail Boss and pay much closer attention.

try a primer pocket reamer tool should cut the old primer out

I actually had something like this happen when shooting my LR308 loaded with Winchester primers. It wasn't a particularly heavy load either. 38gr rl15 under a 175smk in LC brass. I had a couple that separated in the pocket, and the rest separated once punched out.

I have a couple thousand once-fired .38 Special brass.

I have some pieces in my current rotation, about 1000 pieces, that I've reloaded 15-20 times - that I know.

When I get down to under 500 pieces I'll open another gallon zip-lok bag and add that to the rotation.

No they are not. I corrupted some files playing around with my OS (ubuntu). 'might be the issue.
