New in Texas
Pleasure to meet you all. I'm a (soon-to-be) Savage owner from Texas; I've been shooting action pistol and military rifle for a while in the Garand/M1A division. A few weeks ago I decided to begin construction on a .308 bolt rifle to shoot long-ish range. I've settled on .308 even though there are arguably better choices out there, because of four reasons:
1) My "big" guns are now all 30 caliber, so I'm not currently interested in stocking components for 6/6.5MM
2) I have dies, powder, brass etc. from shooting my M1A, even though they'll have a slightly different load
3) I can readily purchase factory ammo if needed
4) I plan to take this rifle hunting at some point
I'll use the forumsearch tool to narrow down my model, but expect opinion questions.
Thanks!

Welcome. Nothing wrong with the .308. Even though I have long range rilfes in other calibers, I will always have at least one in .308. I shoot 175 MatchKings out to 1000yds pretty regularly. I would say thats the best way to start. You will have a lot more load choices, and you won't have to load to such a short OAL as you do with the M1A. Let us know how it goes.

Welcome to the board. Grew up in Odessa. Escaped after high school. Live in Montana now. Don't come here... it's cold and desolate, nothing to see here...uhhh. Yeah, like that.
