Did trigger Mod- now have bolt cocking issue- .223

I was able to do the trigger mod for free with a screw i had on hand and a spring from a pen. Was the exact same length as the stock spring and less than half as strong so i didn't mess with cutting it any. I also didn't mess with polishing the trigger/sear. Got her put back together and took to the range today. Works great. I wasn't able to best my previous top grouping- but it is much easier to shoot consistently smaller groups now- 1 inch on down to sub .5 inch on occasion.

But now I have the bolt cocking issue mentioned on this site. I tried to take the bolt apart but it will not budge. I even put a vice-grip on the allen wrench and nothing. After re-reading the thread on this issue, I think I am better off to send it in to Savage and get it fixed right and proper anyways. I will be giving them a call on Monday- hopefully i can just send the bolt in as someone else on here did.

The firing pin spring catches on the inside of the bolt when it is opened- when you pull back on the bolt to extract a round, the spring unwinds and uncocks the firing pin. You then have to take the bolt out and manually cock the firing pin to get it back in the gun.

The fix is a new spring design they are putting in now from what i have read on here.

Its set, or not.
If the firing pin didn’t catch the latch.
Only 2 thing are involved.
Your missing one spring, or you try to play with overtravel in such manner the trigger won’t catch the pin.

An easy fix is to place a brass washer between the spring and the inside of the bolt assembly screw. Make a washer from .015-.020" brass shim stock.
The washer is soft enough to to let the sharp end of the spring to grab it and let it rotate with the spring. The washer also distributes the load all the way around the spring with no sharp edges to dig in. Dab some grease between the washer and BAS.

I talked to Savage warrenty service this morning and they told me to send the bolt in- it is already on the way.

As I said before- I was putting alot of force on the bolt assembly screw and it would not open. I didn't want to risk wrecking anything and someone on here said they got it fixed up and back in action in less than 2 weeks sending it back and that they are using a different spring system in the bolt now.

Of course- the guy on the phone didn't aknowlege there was any common problem and I didn't push the issue- as long as they are fixing it- thats all i care. I don't need it for coyotes till next month now anyways. We are currently having a tropical winter up here in MN.

There is a thread on this issue on the second or third page of this forum- my problem is exactly as described in that thread and elsewhere on the web.

I got my bolt back exactly 2 weeks after sending it and took her to the range today. Seems to be working great so far.
