I'm going to send a factory, stainless, 338 Win Mag barrel which has the on/off brake in to get rechambered to 338/375 Ruger. I plan to just have the barrel cut and crowned at 20" and go without a brake. But could the factory brake be removed and potentially reinstalled on another gun? My Father-in-Law loves the idea of a muzzle brake that can be turned off. So I thought that I'd give it to him if it can be removed and reused.

yes they will screw off. may be tight. Put some nails through a row of holes to give you something to turn it
Anybody know what thread the factory brake uses?

9/16", hmmm...The barrel thread OD was what I was curious about. I was hoping it was an odditiy like 17/32" (.531). I have been thinking about buying one and trying it, but I want to put it on a .560od sporter barrel. I've made brakes with 17/32" x 28tpi threads(Herters used to make them too) when I didn't want to go down to 1/2" and it works out pretty good. I may just cut the barrel back a little until it's thicker. If anyone else has seen a different thread let me know.
If they are 9/16" Major diameter on the threads then they are probably a 9/16-24 RH thread.
Several European makers used 9/16-24 LH threads on military arms at one time.
I actually have a tap for the 9/16-24 RH new in the rubber coating, but wish it was a 5/8-24 RH though.
