I have a model 110 GXP in .300 win mag, and I am thinking of buying some hornady superformance 180 grn. to try. Was wondering if anybody has tried these and what you think of them. Was reading on another web page that some have had troubles with the magnum cartridges expanding to much in Savage rifles and not being able to eject them. Ant thoughts or experiences? How about accuracy?
Well not in your caliber, but I have tried the Hornady Superformance in .223 in 2 or 3 bullet weights. All functioned fine in my rifles, no issues at all. Some rifles liked some bullet weights better than others for accuracy, but overall I would say I'm pleased with Hornady Superformance.
I have shot it out of my 338 Win Mag and have had zero probs. If fact my rifle does clover leafs at 100 and 3 inch group at 500.
shoots 1/2 inch groups with 95 grain sst in my youth model .243 savage with factory barrel. I tried some in .270 that did not shoot well in my .270 with factory barrel. It will just depend on if yours likes it or not.
I use the 180 grain sst Superformance in my 116 and haven't had any problems with them. Mine shoots them around 1/2-3/4moa too.
I was shooting dime size groups at 100 yards using the Superformance SST 117gr in my custom Savage .257 Roberts. Good to go!
terrible from my 30-06, but it is a light mountain rifle, AND it is not a savage. My 3 shot group was around 1 3/4 at 100 yards. :'(
I have shot some Superformance 150's in my 308 Win. groups of 1 1/2" at 200 are normal. Better than 1MOA out to 300 yards. Hornady match brass is used.
6.5 Creedmoor with Superformance and 129 Hornady SST shot well.
VERY dirty bore after using it in 243.
Tried a box for s&g's in my .270 mostly because I needed some recoil therapy but didn't have any ammo loaded up. I cringed at "buying" ammo. Well just like most handloads some shoot some don't, it didn't in mine. 5 shots went into 2-2.5" group blah. Oh and I chrono everything, advertised @ 3200 with the 130 sst, actually went 3125 from a 24" barrel. My 130sst load shoots easy 3/4moa and clocks 3200 on the number. Me I am not impressed with "slowperformance"
AKShooter found EXACTLY what I have.
In 3 different calibers now it runs slow, but in my experience it has a wide velocity swing as well. In 308 the worst box swung a tad over 300 fps.
If it's rocket science, they need some scientists...
I bought some in 25-06 loaded with the 117gr sst. zeroed the rifle and was getting a little over an inch at 100 yards. I shot a whitetail doe from a shooting house at about 70 yards and she ran off of the green field into an overgrown clear cut. A fair amount of blood but after tracking for about a half mile I never found her. My son shot a fox with the same box of ammo and turned it inside out. I'm thinking the sst bullet may be too fragile for the velocity of the 25-06 to use on larger game.
I'm back to handloading accubonds and don't know what possessed me to shoot anything else.
Using the "powder" with a 75gr v-max (46.5grs)

I finally got to chrono mine yesterday. In my 300 win mag I was getting 3228 fps out of my Sin-Arms 28" barrel! Now granted it's a 28" barrel but with speeds like that I think I'll forget about building a Weatherby or a RUM. At least for now anyway. ;) I also chrono'ed some 243 superformance varmint with the 58gr v-max. My 243 is a Ruger M77 MKII Varmint/Target with 26" barrel. It's barrel must be a little slow or that load doesn't live up to expectations. I got 3810 fps out of it. Nothing to sneeze at but Hornady quotes 3925fps for that load and I think that's from a 24" barrel. I haven't checked the bore yet to see how dirty it is though but given the speed and accuracy of it I can live with a dirty bore.
Shot some more of this stuff in 223 & .338wm. Was given a partiel box of .338 and bought the .223, accuracy in the 223 was good 1" groups from an AR but still 100fps slower than advertised. The .338 stuff was 200 grainers and I burned it up sighting a scope in, 100fps slow on it to. Accuracy can't be judged tikkas recoil lug is a joke, it will only shot 1.5" groups anyways, needing to sell it haha.
You mean you can buy ammo with the powder in them already?... At a store?.... ::).
If the SuperFormance hornady stuff has the SST bullet, I would think they'd be pretty accutrate. I use the SST's in my '06 & .270 and do very well with them but I gotta agree with Mr. 243LRP - they do leave alot of copper in the barrel.
The 130gr Hornady SST over 55.3gr of H4831 make for a pretty accurate round for my .270... I never chrono'ed them though... I just know they come out the hole in the end of the pipe on my rifle going very, very fast.... :o
What kinda money do they cost? On a per 20 round box? (the SuperFormance stuff I mean...)

It's actually pretty reasonable. I shoot the 130 grain sst superformance in my 270 and you can find it and other standard calibers for low to mid $20's for a box online easily. I've got some for my 338 too but haven't got to try it yet. Even it was only about $33 per box. I haven't gotten to chrono all of them yet but it seems that it does really well in some calibers and in others they left a lot of change on the table. The 7mm rem mag comes to mind. Even Horandy's advertised ballistics for it are anemic. But it seems they're dead on with the 300 win mag. I got 100 fps over advertised velocity in my 28" barrel which would be about right since they make their claims from 24" barrels. My 243 either has a slow barrel (which is possible) or they left a little to be desired on that load too. Of course, my 243 is new so the barrel isn't broken in yet. It may get faster after some more rounds through it. Still a 58 grain v-max at a little over 3800fps out of my Ruger will take care of any 'yote or groundhog out there.
Cost seems reasonable enough. I don't quite understand the emphasis on velocity. Wouldn't the accuracy aspect be a little more important when banging one off on a 375yd journey?
After all, whatever's on the recieving end isn't going to know the difference between 2950fps & 3400fps. Even at 2000fps it would still knock out the target, no? Or, am I in the wrong direction with this?.....
Besides, the cost of premium ammo is what got me started in reloading. Nosler / Federal Vital Shok ammo for my '06 was costing $45 a box of 20. I needed to fill out a mortgage application to go shooting on a weekend :o :o :o
Velocity notwithstanding, I like being able to put 5- 200yds downrange & keep them inside of that 1 inch red dot on the target..... When my eyes are working & focused & my arthitis in my fingers isn't flared up, I mean....

You're right. The extra velocity doesn't matter if your rifle doesn't shoot them accurately. I like speedy cartridges though. The idea is flatter trajectory to make the longer hits a little easier. The higher speed does increase the energy too though. But if your rifle doesn't shoot them accurately then it doesn't matter. My 300 and my 243 do shoot them pretty accurate though so it's a win win for me. As for cost, that's what I like about Hornady, good quality ammo for a more reasonable price than a lot of the other premium ammo.
Ahhhh Soooooo... I can certainly understand the need for speed.
Ya know, as far Hornady products, I have a bunch of .270 & 30.06 brass I found in the spent case bucket at my local range. At this time these cases have been reloaded a total of 7 times for the '06 & 9 for the .270.
Really nice stuff. One of these days when I have a few extra bucks to spend, maybe after the November election and a few more years to get my business back to profitability, I'd like to pick up a bag or two of each. I like it & more importantly, my rifles love it.
