    Practice at the rifle range leads to successful long shot varmint hunting.  Factory orange & white test targets.

    It is not uncommon when visiting an outdoor shooting range during the fall to find an extensive variety of firearms being shot. From rimfires to centerfires and black powder muzzleloaders to black powder cartridge rifles, many shooters sighting-in the newest shotgun slugs or sabots checking targets with a spotting scope then making sight adjustments.

    January is the last month for squirrel hunting in Wisconsin. In my opinion this is the best hunting of the year. The thaw or warm days above freezing are best. The woods are clear of most of the leaves on the trees, and with this cover missing holes and nests are easy to locate.

    Since those of us who regularly visit this website are true believers in the at-home switch barrel (and bolt head) versatility of the Savage 110 and its successors, I realize I'm preaching to the choir. Suffice to say my enthusiasm for this action as a platform for many uses continues to increase.

    I donít know how many times Iíve been approached by a young hunter and told, ďIím a new hunter wanting to get started in hunting coyotes and, would like you to tell me how itís doneĒ. Iíve seen this question asked a million times from people on line also. People that Iím willing to bet have never shot a coyote except by chance while hunting other animals.

    All this talk about the old Savage rifles, and rarely do we hear about what they were used for. For as far back as Savage started to sell the Model 1899 and other models, they were advertised beyond their actual use. Ads of the 1895s with kills of such animals as Lions and elephants were amazing to the general hunting population.
