Savage Barrel Shank Sizes - standard on left, large on right.

In 2002 Savage began offering rifles in the Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) and Remington Ultra Magnum (RUM) calibers. When these were finally in the catalog, there was a change made to the barrel shank diameter. Standard barrel shank diameter on standard calibers are 1.055" x 20tpi. On the new WSM, RUM, and SAUM calibers the shank diameter is 1.120" x 20tpi. ...

I've never been able to find a single thread with good photos and detailed explanations of how to adjust a factory trigger on my new-to-me 10FP, so I decided today to snap some pictures and write this thread. ...

This information only applies to Savage Model 110's made between 1958 and 1965.
I have a 1960 vintage 110 with the same trigger mechanism you are speaking of. I also have several post '66 vintage 110's that have the "new" trigger. After using both---my personal preference is the "old" trigger.

The Model 212 Camo as delivered from Savage.

Aside from introducing a number of new models to their catalog each year, the engineers at Savage Arms have also kept busy making small changes and improvements to many of their existing models. Some are for the better and others have proven to be for the worse or utterly unnecessary from ...

A new shooting season has come and my old Shilen Ratchet rifled barrel was at 1000 rounds fired, but it was still shooting well. Even so I thought maybe it was time to re-chamber it or try a new barrel, but anything that would follow it would really have to be super impressive. I noticed this year that Northland Shooters Supply was offering a new line of barrels. At first I sarcastically thought “Wow, another new barrel maker!” but I then noticed that the barrel was from the makers of Krieger and this sparked my interest. I have owned several Krieger barrels in the past and they have always proven to be a top notch barrel.

Out of the secret laboratory of Savage comes a new rifle called the Axis, a lower cost, rugged rifle, based off the Savage 110 design marketed towards the younger shooter, with an all-new modern design. The Axis is designed to compete against the Remington 770 rifle, and other entry class hunting rifles. Savage did a good job of keeping this rifle a secret, as soon as I heard that such a rifle existed, I had to get one to see what it was all about.

Standard rifling on left, Ratchet Twist on right.

Needing a new barrel for my long range Savage I decided to go with a Shilen barrel - but not the normal six groove rifled barrel, rather their “Ratchet Rifled” four-groove profiled land barrel. The Shilen “Ratchet Rifled” (or as I call it, the “Ratchet Twist”) barrel has a radical rifling design that has little publicity or little known about it.

Ever since I was first introduced to Savage firearms back in 2001, I had always wondered why they didn't offer their Model 210F Slug Gun in a 20-gauge version. It just made sense to me as not all guys like the brutish kick of a 12-gauge slug gun, and most female and youth hunters would be far more comfortable with the smaller gauge. ...
